Thinking of a week in the south of France in early September. Any reccommendations. No kids we don't mind having to hire a car. Thanks

i love chamonix, the amount of natural beauty within a stone's throw of that town is unrivalled.

Côte d'Azur ie. nice and further on to monaco would be another choice

for chamonix the nearest airport is geneva about a 45-50 minute drive, and the drive is spectacular especially once you see the snow capped peaks of the alps and mont blanc for the first time

for the Côte d'Azur there is nice airport which is only a few miles outside of nice itself. nice is only about 20 minutes drive from monaco

The Bordeaux area has to be a 'must see (taste!!)' place to visit. A bit west of south but south enough. Whole area has much history and of course is famous for its wine regions, easily got to by most transport and well worth a visit.

The area around Arcachon is great. If you're into sand dunes this is the place for you!

The nicest place in the South of France that I've been to is Marsaille! Le Camarque, sans marie de le mer (I hope I spelt that right!) It is fantastic, a bit on the expensive side but worth every penny! Enjoy the bull games (Or fights) The horse riding, the Flamingos, beautiful sea, etc..I could go on and on.. Try visit if you can! :) Enjoy!

just posted about Collioure in another post, Roussillon and the Langecdoc is pretty cool, Carcassone, the Pyreneees, the Cathar mountaintop castles, Vin et soleil,

But Chamionix is pretty spectacular. mountainy and accessible by tourists by cable car to get you up high in the mountains.

Hmmm - anywhere for me really!

The general south is great for holidays. Fly into Carcassonne, hire a boat on the Canal du Midi. See Collioure, Montpellier, Avignon, Marseilles. Then onto Nice and the Cote d'azur - Monaco etc. And fly home from Nice.

Olaola, we're doing the opposite!! Flying into Nice and leaving Carcassone. From suggestions in a separate thread our rough itinery is 4 nights in Nice, then head to San Remo in Italy while visiting Monaco enroute, then back to Antibes, St Raphael, Marseille, Aix en Provence, Avignon, Montpellier and then Carcassone.

    Cannot wait!!

I posted in your other thread :) It's fabulous - you'll love it all! I would love to go back to Avignon again - we were only there for one night and I don't know if it was enough. Oh the food, the wine, the sun!
