I don't need a full office suite, just something for spreadsheets and calculations....

Or should I just buy office or iwork?

Open Office is a free and open source option.
    http://www.openoffice.org/
You have the option when installing to only install the spreadsheet application (called Calc)

If you dont have it allready you may also need X11,

Good luck and happy free spreadsheeting!

Open and Neo are the obvious free solutions; the lads beat me to it.

If your really pushed, Excel is available as a stand alone, a bit of leg work and you should turn it up fairly dirt cheap. I have seen it for low enough; try ensure it's the 2004 edition to be sure.

if you've got access all the time from your machine you could use google docs online as well .. it'll allow you to save the file locally to various formats as well.

The 2008 edition won't run VBA scripts so be careful if that's important for you. OO.o is probably the best, and you don't need X11 any more to run it.
