I missed this film when it came out in the cinemas. its Daniel Day Lewis’ latest film.
I rented it last night on Blu Ray and I was very impressed. The character development is strong is all the major roles of the film and you can see from the get go that Daniel really had become his character (as he always does!)
You could hear glimmers of ‘bill the Butcher’ from gangs of New York when he spoke.

The film is based on oil rigging in the early 1900’s. its shows Daniel’s (also called Daniel in the film) journey from the bottom to the top in his success. His accent and speaking tone is spot on. This for me would be the most memorable aspect of the film, it was a joy to hear him speak – and he delivers some cracking lines.

On paper the plot would seem quiet boring, Daniel carries it through and keeps you compelled to watch and although the ending for me was a bit of a let down, I enjoyed it overall and would recommend it.
    8/10 :)

yeah...I saw this one in the cinema and thought it was class. The ending though.......

Did Daniel really love his son over the years....or did he use him to come across as a family man and therefore easier for towns to accept him coming to their town and raping their oil supplies ?

My view was that Daniel did love his son. But it was 50/50 between that and the oil. This can be seen after the accident with his son and he carries him the shack. He’s holding him and checking he’s ok but in the background the oil is pouring. You can see his hesitation but he chooses to go to the oil.
When it came to family or any mention of his wife or brother we see a very emotional side of him. His son was his only hope of family but his love for being independent and his work ethic over shadowed the relationship and eventually won.
I think he deeply regretted the final conversation with his son.

I watched this last night and i must admit i felt short changed. The hype about the whole thing put this film way up there for me. Daniel got his oscar so it must be good.
Ok fair enough it was...... alright but throwing an ould mustache and sticking to the same period charachter that he always plays really shouldnt have got him that oscar. The oscar for me was to go to the preacher.
I missed it in the cinema, i should have left it in extra vision, and you know that if you tune in to RTE next christmas day it'll be on our tv screens, and again the following year, and the year after that, and the year after that and probably again the year after that.
RTE-It does exactly what it says on the tin

    Spoiler:

I'd love to know what Daniel said to the Preacher as
he got up after being baptised, you can see a shocked look on his face (the preacher's). I think a few scenes later the preacher is leaving town.

anyways, I'm sure it was malevolent and threatening ;)

"I drink your milkshake" nice one Mike.

A space suit, dont be silly. He was the same charachter in "gangs of new york". And even if he was waring a space suit would that have changed the film?.....would it? huh? Answer me that mountain hips!

The characters were completely differnent. Day Lewis brought an intensity to Plainview which was chilling. He was able to do so much with just a simple look or a few words that it was truely inspiring to see. Technically if he had been wearing a space suit it would have been a very different film given that space trvel at the time was not possible and the inclusions of such trappings owuld make it a Sci Fi film.

Lets keep it on topic here folks. Discuss the film, not someone else's user name.
