Thanks a million for the feedback.

So the performance gain is mainly coming from the upgraded processor?

The RAM was actually 4GB in my oiginal spec - I forgot to say 2x - the price was correct for 4GB though.

So tell me... why P31 mobo instead of P35?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,992 ✭✭✭✭partyatmygaff

    cheaper
Normally i'd recommend the P35 since it has Raid and Sli and supports the new 45nm cpus

But i wanted to stay under budget
if you want to be truely future proof, change the p31 for a p35

    So why this

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Tray, 8192Kb, LGA775, 64bit, Kentsfield

    Instead of this:

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Tray 6144Kb, LGA775, 64bit

What are the arguments in terms of gaming performance? There's nothing between them in price really.

    Cheers

i'm looking to upgrade at the minute, and from asking the same question, this is what i understood. The E8400 is going to give you better gaming straight off the bat but the quad 6600 is going to be a lot more future proof as developpers start to use its capabilities more and more

Thanks a million shrapnel - that's really helpful.

Think I'll go for the the 8400 Core Duo.

I'd consider spending a few bob extra and getting a 750GB Samsung F1 drive, AFAIK HWV has them for around 67 euro now...

Plus those EP35-DS3* or EP35-DS4* mobos all work very well indeed as a Hackintosh if you're into that kind of thing.
