    Heya,

Iv been looking to get into a marketing position since January, but with no such luck. Initally I was a bit fussy, and skipped going for a few jobs but more recently Id jump at anything. But, Iv noticed a huge decline in the amount of jobs available in this area in the past few weeks. Is it due to the recession, or is it normal for this time of year? Can imagin the recession helps anyway!!

Im from Cork, and the idea of looking for a job in Dublin is appealing. Is there a shortage of jobs all across the country?

Iv been toying with the idea of getting into teaching, but Id have to go back and do higher level leaving cert irish, before doing any teaching course, and with everything it would just take too long. So that idea has been scrapped.

Just wondering if theres many people on the same boat as me...

Head up there may be another option.. several people I know became primary teachers within a year through studying in the UK here.

You dont need hons Irish, and when you came home qualified after a year spend the summer in the Gaeltacht, sit an alternative Irish exam and you will be fully qualified.

Cue the disdain from the Irish grads who studied 4 years in Trin-i-tay

Keep in mind we produce tons of marketing graduates each year.

    Would you work in sales?

Never fancied sales to be honest. I know Im not helping myself by being fussy!

I have heard that alot of companies have a recruitment freeze at the moment. Which wouldn't help. They all want someone with experience, which is a catch 22. But I guess people have to sit tight until something comes along.

Is it just in the marketing area that this is happening? How are IT people doing these days?

IT is ok... but it really depends on what skills you have.

I know of a junior software tester who is having a lot of trouble getting a job.

In general the industry is doing ok though.

It's a well known fact that should a company face any kind of downturn or hope to reduce costs, the marketing department is always one of the first to be reduced. What kind of marketing? In this day and age you should really consider doing an extra module in digital marketing. It's not that well paid to start off with but is still quite a niche market so that's a road you could explore. I would give sales more thought. It's a fabulous way of honing business acumen, making an absolute fortune and getting your foot in the door.

OP, I am in the same position. I am looking for a marketing role too, but was happy to temp until something suitable came up. There has been nothing on the temping side which is scary:(. Then again, it could be the time of the year - students on the books etc.

I would be interested in digital marketing - does anyone have any information on good courses?

I was looking at a job which has an emphasis on CRM - I have no experience in a CRM system as such. Are there courses on this or is it something you learn on the job??

It is just the time of year. I'm getting hundreds of CVs every day from people looking for temp work.

I think it's just a mentality change. Students used to be willing to work in McDonalds etc. Now they want to work in an office.

From my experience, EVERYONE does marketing...

If you walk into a call centre, you'll find most people with degrees, have one in marketing.

I don't think the recession has anything to do with it, i just think there's more people with marketing degreesn than jobs available in marketing.

This is true. I've been back in Dublin for a week now for the summer, and have only been throwing myself at office temp jobs.

A week on, and I've got a job that's 12 hours a day, involves walking around, and pays really badly. But at least it's a job! Thread starter, you need to set your sights lower. I'm sure there are less jobs this summer than there were last, but maybe that's my imagination.

Dublindude, do you work for an agency? If so, I have a few questions to ask out of interest!

yeah most students i know were trying to get office jobs this summer but it was more to do with getting experience for future jobs or in order to acquire a good placement as a lot of course have placements now and there's though competition for places. and most peoples won't hire students either in my experience.

very few of the people i know actually got office job and even the students i know that were looking for restaurant jobs etc. are having a hard time getting or keeping work because of the bad summer tourism wise we're having.

Oh really?? I didn't know we were having a bad summer for tourism.

What really gets on my nerves are the ads up (especially from agencies), for a "data entry clerk", "no experience required" and "junior cert required". I've had 5 different data entry jobs, have my leaving cert, and get an automated response back saying there's nothing suitable for me atm. Do they just put these ads up to 'cast the net' so to speak?

I really think people shouldn't be as fussy though. People want nice comfy office jobs, and aren't prepared to settle for cleaning toilets/work that involves walking the streets for hours on end (lol, sorry realize that sounds bad)/wash dishes, etc. At the end of the day, money is money, and either you need it badly enough or not!

well I grew up in a tourist area of kerry and there is no jobs what so ever there this summer even for someone that's willing to do anything - even staff at hotels that have been there for years are having their hours cut back drastically.

^^I get what your saying about those ads where they say there is no jobs available, but i think they are looking for the least experienced people possible (a category i probably fit into) because they are the cheapest; you said you had experience so that means you would be looking for more.

Well what Iv noticed is that recruitment agencies have loads of jobs up on their websites, and when I get in touch with them about one they say that the job is gone. A month later the job is still up on the web site. And its not that I wouldnt be suitable for the position, its just that there not taking old jobs off as it would make them look less busy. It annoying at this stage to be honest.

Someone from Dublin was on the radio yesterday, saying that there's loads of jobs out there. Im not sure about that, maybe depending on the area. Iv spoken to alot of people who have said that there very wary of the company they apply to, if its a company that they could see, that could close up and head to China, then there less likely to apply there, in case there out of a job in a few years time.

My sister has been looking for an office temping job for the last month through a recruitment agency, with no luck. She's just finished 2nd year BIS in UCC, and she cannt get a summer job coz she has no experience. And the shop she is working in, has cut her hours back to 3 hours a week, coz there not making as much money as they did last year.

I agree, a job is a job, and many the toilet I cleaned (I working in a hotel, cleaning rooms for 4 years during school). If I had to Id do it again, granted I would be thrilled about it.

Don't forget Art as their major subject ;). Then again I had a team member (Italian) in the call centre who had a PHD in Nuclear physics and could not get a job in his home country and was working in there.

If anyone in Dublin's really desperate to make a few bob, I found this which I'm doing on Saturday and Tuesday:
    http://www.gumtree.ie/dublin/93/26216593.html

The guy I spoke to told me we'd be meeting tomorrow at 3, just to let everyone know how it's going to work, and he sounded like he REALLY needed more people...

I'm in exactly the same situation as your sister except commerce instead and i've had no luck either and i've been applying for loads of jobs since february both in cork and kerry. none of the people i know from college have had much luck either, just doing the part time hours that they were doing during college or have been let go or not been able to find anything.

this is wierd but with your user surname & just finished 2nd yr bis i think i might know your sister :P if shes going out with a guy from fermoy then tell her dazza said hi :D if its the other walsh girl in 2nd yr name starts with N then ignore me wrong walsh!

in terms of jobs I think we are fussier about what jobs we will do after being spoiled by the celtic tiger,

The company i work for have been looking to hire people to work in support in cork for a while now and are finding it very hard to get people in and theyve filled a number of dif roles that have come up since then e.g. Account managers, Developers but support had only a handful of people apply.

Supports a tough job dealing with customers like (thank god i dont work in it :P) but a jobs a job and I was surprised that esp in cork so few people applied.

No, I used to work for a large famous online recruitment website as their financial controller. :)

I know the industry pretty well though, and still work within it somewhat...

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.
