Stayed in Jurys in Kensington about a month ago, Nice hotel, great cooked breakfast, free Irish papers, 10 mins walk from Harrods and Natural History Museum and 3 mins from tube stop. I loved it, would definately stay there again. Paid 400 euros for 2 people for 3 night (sat - Mon) Good deals on their own website.

stayed in the Days Hotel Waterloo last year, its about 2 minutes from tube station that will bring you up to the main nightlife area, £10 in taxi home when tubes are closed.

Also about 5 minute walk from Westminister bridge so very central for sightseeing. As far as I can remember it cost about £100 per night for the room only.

If you are using the tube make sure you get a day traveller ticket as it is way better value than paying for each trip.

Check the hotels on the Ryanair website, I always find them reasonable compared to other sites.

Travel Lodge in Covent Garden-central and a tube near it.
    Cheap enough aswell.

Holiday Inn Kensington Forum, excellent value right in the heart of Kensington, excellent Hotel restaurant and bar, great coffee houses close by, very close to Harrods, Kensington Gardens and direct tube line to Heathrow. Very very nice area imo.

First link is Hotel official site, second link is Holiday Inn UK where you can get better value rates with breakfast just type in London and when list of hotels come up click on Holiday Inn Kensington Forum, don't confuse with Holiday Inn Kensington which is a different hotel. Expect to pay approx £80-£110 depending on how busy hotel is, but even at £110 exceptioonal value imo.

    Thanks folks!
One last question, what is the best airport to fly to, if I am going with Ryanair, basically to get around the city and all that.

I know Standstead it's train up and then tube, how about the others? BEtter or worse?

I fly into Heathow Airport usually (BMI and Aer Lingus) and it can be hit and miss in terms of flight delays. Advantage is Tube connects direct from the airport direct into the Kensington area and central London.

Gatwick airport in the south is accessible by train from Victoria station I believe. From there you can switch to 3 different tubes. Gatwiick is the other alternative to Stansted for Ryanair.

Personally I only ever fly bmi into Heathrow, they can sometimes work out cheaper than Ryanair and service wise are better than Aer Lingus www.flybmi.com. Also with bmi no extras such as baggage etc.. the price you initially see is the price you will pay no having to add in baggage and boarding charges.

It does depend where you end up staying as to the best airport to go for, though London does have an excellent transport system. Though again I always go for Heathrow.

When you have picked your hotel if you want I can advise as as to best airport and transport links for you.

st. giles is a good choice. great location, 30 sec from the tube, right next to oxford street, and the british museum is nearby. and it's cheap as well.

Thanks to all. Basically I haven't a clue what hotel to get as there as so many, I was going to get the flight first (before they all get too expensive as going in two weeks) and then pick hotel.

Heathrow you get the tube straight into central London.

Was in London and Disney Paris last week. For the London bit, we stayed in the Premier Inn in Kings Cross. Was perfect for us (family of four) as it was 2 mins walk from the Tube and 5 mins from St. Pancras where we got the Eurostar.

There's not much around Kings Cross but only a few stops on the Tube gets you to any part of central London from there, and we didn't see the point in staying in more expensive, less modern hotels just to be more central when we were 2 mins from the Tube station.

We got the Tube from Heathrow to Kings Cross direct - £4 per adult I think it was, kids free. Taxi could be around £70  so obviously I'd recommend you should base your hotel close to a Tube station. Get day tickets for the Tube when sightseeing etc., very good value and great being able to hop on and off and change lines whenever you want.

The Premier Inn we stayed in was modern and clean, had a bar and basic restaurant and was decent value for money. It was around €400 for 3 nights for a family room, incl. full breakfast, so you should get a cheaper rate than that for the weekend in a double room.

I booked the Charing Cross. It's central and got great reviews on Tripadvisor.

    Going in August, can't wait!

Heathrow, as mentioned you have the Piccadilly line tube and also the Heathrow Express, though this is more expensive than the tube, again does boil down to where you are staying as to whether to go for tube or Heathrow express and your budget. HI Ken Forum is direct by tube from Heathrow 38 mins.

If going for Heathrow I would pick bmi over Aer Lingus every time but again if you are on a budget just go for the cheapest on the day.

Also you have the Heathrow Connect train option to Paddington as well. Takes 10mins longer but is a good deal cheaper than the Express. There's also some nice hotels around Paddington and also by Hyde Park (10mins walk away).
