Planning on staying in san diego on my travels to california in september, was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for hotels or what area of city to stay in as most of hotels I have looked at are really overpriced for poor hotels, thanks in advance for any recommendations

likewise..im heading there also on my trip around california in August so would like to know about accomodation options in San Diego. don't mind hostels as long as they are clean.

This hostel good craic is sort of hippy beach resort location in SD. Public transport is very good/safe/cheap so you can stay anywhere from central downtown to mission bay /pacific beach. The rapid metro service goes from border with mexico to northern suburbs of SD and out to the west.
Something like hotel below would be fine for sightseeing city for a few days.

If you want to be socialising in beach resorts or in the downtown gaslight district at night you are gonna pay a lot more for accomodation there but again taxis are cheap and public transport good.
