    hi

was at the range yesterday and i found i hit the ball great when i had the toe of the club setup to the ball as opposed to the centre of the club. whats the theory behing this?

i know people can setup like this if they are hitting a certain shot so i am seeking some clarification!

    thanks

So, if you set it up correctly at address, you usually hit it off the heel?
Try standing a tad further away and address in the middle. ;)

I found this to be the number one hint when using my driver.

If the ball is teed up high, as is the case for almost every driver on the market these days, you should address the ball with the toe of the club. The reason is simple to demonstrate:

Address the ball with the club exactly where you want it to be at impact, i.e. with the ball slap bang in the middle of the clubface. The bottom of the driver will be raised off the ground because the ball is teed up high. Now lower the club to the ground slowly, from your shoulders not your wrists and not by crouching further forward. You will see that the club has naturally moved inside the target line and the toe is now square to the ball. When you swing and strike the ball, the club will be moving above the ground and will be square to the ball again.

If you are finding better results with other clubs, such as irons, when you don't have the ball teed up, then there is a problem with your swing IMHO. You're hands should be in more or less the same position at impact as they were at address. In reality, they need to be a tiny bit outside the address position because your clubs shaft will bend downwards a little as you swing through, but you wouldn't really be able to consciously allow for that I would think...

    Just my tupence worth!
