techie question - NTL and Wii

Just wondering if anyone is using a Wii on NTL broadband - what do you have your MTU set to on the Wii?

I tried it at 0, 1500 and 1450 but keep having the same problem.

Causes random disconnects (Usually get 1-2 races out of it (mario kart) and it gets disconnected)

I have the Wii in my Routers' DMZ so it's definitely the MTU that needs to be altered.

    Cheers,
    V

Lots of people on here have had trouble with NTL + Wii online games. Don't think there has been a concrete solution mentioned, yet.

Just curious - what makes you think it's "definitely the MTU that needs to be altered"?

Process of elimination really and looking at various threads about this and Wiis in general - I'll just summarise

Wii connects ok to the router as shop/internet channel all working.

Wii is now in the DMZ on the router so is not behind a firewall doing any blocking magic ( I'm not a fan of this btw - like all my gadgets to be as secure as possible).

The reason I know it's the MTU (in my case anyway) was I was changing the value and having varying effects on my connection (using Mario Kart WFC to try it out)...

1500 was the slowest value - usually took 5 minutes to load a race in Mario Kart and instant disconnect when race was loaded (didnt even get to play!).

1450 - race loaded after about two minutes - usually played one race and then disconnect.

0 - the default I usually get about two races out of it after a 15/20 sec load.

I have a couple of other values I'm going to try so fingers crossed will get it sorted

EDIT: tried 1492 - This took forever (over 5 mins) so I just disconnected
tried 1495 - This took 30 seconds to load but instant disconnect.

OK I've been using 1436 as the MTU for the last half hour - hasn't failed yet!

it seemed to take a long time to load up the connection (over 2 mins) initially, but connection has been v quick and stable since (I don't mind the load up once it's stable - :D I knew I was losing races because of the connection!)

Anyway hopefully this is my issue sorted - only time will tell..

There are tools you can get for your optimum MTU.

Also check your ping times to Nintendo servers if possible. Someone was saying UPC route Irish traffic through Amsterdam.

You maybe able to get better ping time by using Open DNS who have servers in London. Open DNS is free and IMO better than most ISP's DNS servers.

One nice feature is if it can't find the website, it performs a websearch for the web page for you :D

Worth a shot if still getting disconnects.

Also if using the router that comes with it (netgear I think), look for firmware updates and check the changelog to see if there are any issues or google search your router model number.

There seems to be issues with netgears and Nintendo WiFi Connection relating to firmware on some models so worth checking this out also.

I don't have access to my Wii at the moment so can't test (am also on NTL) - can you let us know in a week or so if it has been working consistently for you?

Also - I never really had a problem connecting to strangers - just friends. I could play random people for an hour but then try to connect to a friend and it would not work. See if your MTU change affects this too.

I seem to be getting the same, connects fairly sharpish but get disconnected after 1 or 2 races, the error codes it gives seem to be saying theres a problem with the nintendo wfc

I hae my mtu set to 1500 which is the default for my router

You could try reduce your MTU to about 1300 or so. I wouldn't go below 1000 I think because it starts to slow down your connection if you put it too low as well.

Mass Transfer Unit is the amount of data sent by your router in one go to put it in English I guess.

There is a happy medium somewhere I imagine or you could always try the OpenDNS thing since it should reduce ping times since the DNS server is nearer to you than Amsterdam as its in London.

You can always change it back afterwards if it doesn't work. I use OpenDNS on my Irish BB connection without any problems though I use it a secondary DNS to IBB as their DNS server is in Dublin AFAIK and I get good ping times to servers in Ireland that suggest that this is the case.

I think the disconnect problem is probably because your out of contact with Nintendo's server for too long which is why reducing the MTU is helping the issue.

I am having the same problem with my Wii wi-fi connection and NTL (router linksys WRTGC54) and I have tried everything I saw in the forums, but no success.

I am wondering if even the people with Wii wired connection are having the same problem.

Do you know anybody with problems in the Wii wired connection using NTL?

I have the exact same Router with Ice Broadband and I never have issues so it is definitely NTL - you probably know that but just thought I would let you know!
