Hey been asked for an interview for a job in a marketing company. The role says that the job involves sales, promotions and client representation on behalf of companies.

Can somebody give me an idea of what this means in reality? What sort of work is involved?

  • Most of those companies are just door to door sales. When I was job hunting I went to one of those interviews out of interest. It was advertised as marketing, but was just a sales job. They had this glam offices with music blaring and everything, but it was basically door to door sales working only on commission. They made us go out and follow 'experienced' people, basically spend the day walking round a housing estate trying to sell a product, giving the impression that we would be 'chosen' if we impressed the people, when obviously they would have recruited anyone who was interested. Every member of my group seemed to have a criminal conviction, most of them for drunk driving. It was really odd.

So basically most of these things are BS. Genuine marketing jobs are quite hard to come by and they'd ask for qualifications or lots of experience. This crowd would employ anyone. Of course this could be what you're looking for but it wouldn't be my cup of tea at all. And I don't think sales should be allowed to be advertised as marketing, they're two different things completely.

Sounds exactly what I was thinking. Could you actually PM the company you went for as it sounds exactly what i was at with music going, ok offices, all positive.

I went out of interest too for a first interview today and have been called back for a second interview on Thursday to spend the day with an 'experienced' person. My gut feeling is not great on this one so unsure.

I am thinking about cancelling as my gut feeling was bad and am usually right bout these things. Could also find very little information about the company which was strange at the first instance.

I dont want door to door sales so may not be right for me.

sounds like a load of bs to be honest, but why don't you know what the job entails ..did you ask them before agreeing to a second interview ?

These types of companies are notoriously evasive if you try to nail them down with job descriptions - will be very vague saying stuff like "managerial opportunities within 6 months if you are the right person/work hard enough etc, you will be representing world class brands such as [insert name of any huge company recognised worldwide] and will develop rapport and opportunities with these blue chip companies, progressing your career towards worldwide domination yada yada". The "marketing" a

I went for an interview years ago with one of these crowds, and basically got up and left once I discovered exactly what it was about - you know those poor downtrodden souls who are booted out of the backs of hiaces at 7am in various city centres, wearing cheap polyester suits, dragging huge black bags around on wheels, going into shops and trying to hawk a glass chess set/novelty golf practice set/other random gak to disinterested shop staff? That's what that job sounds like it is. Run a mile away from it TBH.

Yeah hard to get any decent job description. Did a bit of routing around after and saw that there is a company with a different name operating from the same address as a marketing company also and this is extra strange as when i got there there was no branding for either company, only other companies not related to marketing at all. Got a very bad feeling straight away.
