I'm planning on bringing my 9 year old and 3 year old kids to the UK....Do they need passports..? a) by plane or b) by ferry..?

No passport is required for any UK or Irish citizens travelling between the two states.

However, if your flying then the airport will want to see some form of ID for their "security" checks and that will vary depending on who you are flying with and how you are checking in.

If flying with Ryanair you will need passports for them.

    Not true:

For British and Irish citizens who are travelling on flights to/from the United Kingdom to/from the Republic of Ireland (Common Travel Area), a valid driving licence with photo is acceptable photo ID.
    ...
Photo-ID for children under 16 years is not required for:

    * Children travelling with an adult between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland or domestic flights within either the United Kingdom or Ireland
    ...
Lots of other details on there as well as details about the online checkin options for which you do need a passport seeing as neither the UK or Ireland have National ID cards, yet:
