I recently bought the Micheal O Muircheartaigh DVD which features his best moments in gaa, one that he's missed out is the Paddy Cullen save of 74. I've had heated discussions about this and im sticking to it that that is one of the greatest moments in gaa. Anyone agree??

I prefer the one where the Kerry guy lobbed the ball over his head to score a goal :D:D

They would be his own personal favourite moments I suppose. That save was on the list for the top 20 GAA moments in the rte poll from a few years ago http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_20_GAA_Moments

To this day we still don't know what that free was for and on top of that how many times have we seen a quick free called back as that one should have been?

He picked the ball straight off the ground.

    It's very obvious to me.

Here is the incident. He clearly put his foot under the ball to lift it up. In regular speed and particularly in the slow motion, you can see that. Even Mikey Sheehy said in the clip that he "picked the ball up perfectly", so that wasn't the reason. Seamus Aldridge also makes no mention of that. He says "a Kerry player backed into him" which would surely mean it should have been a free out. He then goes on to say that the Kerry player was fouled, which clearly he wasn't. Even at that there may have been a minor bit of contact between the two, but nothing that would constitute any kind of free. So even a free out probably would not have been called for.

The referee runs up and well short of Paddy Cullen stops to indicate the free. Mike Sheehy is well behind the referee when the free is taken. He kicked the ball with the referee still having his back to him. He also put it down between the 21 and 13 yard line, so it was definitely taken from the wrong place. So, first of all there was no reason for the free and if anything was a free out, though that would have been harsh and play should have been let continue as Dublin were in possession and heading out with the ball. It would have been silly to call it back. The free was taken from the wrong position with the referee having his back to the player, so it should have been re-taken or been a hop ball then or even a free out.

Well thats as good a clip as any to show to young footballers. Don't Argue with the Referee...especially if you are a goalkeeper. Super technique with the chip though! You could also show the Clip of Paul Galvin acting the eejit and gettin 6 months for it. the sooner we lose this arguing with the refs thing the better.

Oh yeah on Topic: Great Save!

Edit: After watching the incident a few more times, he doesnt really argue... more drift off and forget where he was, standing on the pot with his arms open. Funny to see him rush back though.

He wasn't arguing with the referee. He didn't go up and start remonstrating with the referee. He was nowhere near him and there was nothing about his demeanour to indicate that he was arguing. He was just asking what the free was for. Nearly 30 years on and we've never got an answer.

    I stand corrected.
Having looked at that clip a few times I think he did pick it legally.
Agree with the rest of your post too, except I didn't think it's illegal to take a free from farther out than you're supposed to ?

We frequently see frees being pulled back for being taken in the wrong place. More often we see them being pulled back for being taken when the referee isn't ready. Both cases were apparent in that incident.
