Just a quick Q

    Hi Guys,

I just have a quick for yas. I got offered a job but the job spec says a company car and also in the interview I was told there was a company car. But now they've offered me the position and after I said " I accept " they called back and said that the company car on the job spec was a " mistake that shouldn't be there ". The job is a IT admin job and requires traveling around different sites in Dublin, they said I can use my own car and they'll provide a fuel allowance but it seems very unfair. fair enough it being a mistake on the spec but they said it it came with a company car that was "fully expensed" in the interview.
    What do you guys think?

    Cheers.

Sounds really unfair, but I guess if it was a mistake there's not much that can be done about it. Up to you whether to take the job or not.

Anyone else in the company have a company car?

like was said before does anyone else use their own car or just you? it could be that they will provide one after your probation or what ever.

I'd be asking them things like will they pay your tax and insurance or at least a portion toward it? if your car is insured as a private car then i think there are issues with carrying work material in it. ie your laptop and any kit you may need to install in a site also if the car is broken into while this equipment is stored in it then you may not be covered etc. also if you are in an accident that is your fault is it your insurance that is claimed against or theirs as you are working?

As dade says, check that your insurance is upgraded. A personal policy normally covers you to and from work, but not driving as part of the job. I can't remember what the extra cover is called, but I'm sure your insurer can tell you.

It doesn't look great and first glance, but if it's a decent fuel allowance, then it may not work out too badly as I don't think that your mileage allowance is taxed. What would your BIK liability be if you got a company car? Of course you have to also factor in the wear and tear for the additional usage too.

BIK can be a pain in the rear, IIRC if the company do not have a secure lockup for a van then you don't have to pay BIK and i think this only applied to vans and other commercials, been a long time since i discussed it with an accountant, but if it is a car or other non commercial then you do have to pay BIK but I'm open to correction. something to do with the car being available for personal use and a van/commercial not. also with vans etc the insurance can sometimes only cover certain days and hours etc.

in general the mileage allowance offered by companies covers your fuel AND wear and tear on the car. so any new tires and additional maintenance due to mileage is yours to deal with.

one other thing i forgot to mention is depreciation, you may be putting in a lot of miles so the odometer will keep going up on the car this will effect resale value if and when you go to sell it.

I'd think hard about all these facts and others, personally I'd be worried that someone can make a mistake about a car. I mean it's not like putting in win2003 and meaning Linux.
I'd be thinking are they trying to reduce costs by not getting in a car for you and if so are they in trouble and are only using you to get through a short busy period or have a number of jobs that need doing and will sell you down the river once they are through.
