Hi! Well I'm currently undecided yet as to either get the Canon EOS 400D or 450D. Hopefully I will get it shortly but I am a complete novice. It has always been something i wanted to get into though. Could anyone put me in the direction of any good books/courses that would help me starting out.
    Thanks!

I'm thinking of going the SLR route too, the3rdman. I was looking at those exact 2 cameras. Where did you plan to get your Canon? Online or in a high street store?

I was in Harvey Normans over the weekend, and they have a notice on the back of their catalogue that says if you buy an one of those Canon cameras there, they can sign you up for a free half day course that shows you how to use it.

They also have an interesting finance scheme called Flexirent which means you pay back in installments (over 12,24 or 36 months). The nice thing about this scheme is that the camera is covered against theft, damage and they'll replace/fix free of charge. Very tempting for me as 950/1250 is a bit steep for a one off purchase in the current economy...

Plan on getting it online. Shops just seem to be a complete rip off. Think I will probably buy it on ebay

DigitalBeginners do some very good courses (according to some). I've never done one myself.

Best of luck with your choice.

If You able buy it the 450D. It's have new Digic III picture processor which is faster then 400D's Digic II.
For me cons. only in 450D: SD card storage system.
If You have big hands it's better may fit a 30D or 40D 'cos 400D and 450D are "bit small"
What do you think: an Eos 450D with 18-55 IS lens for 468Ł are expensive here: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1661/5/xx/1/1/criteresn.html

I was actually just looking at that site this morning and thinking of doing one of the courses.

Have they been around long or are they a bit of a cowboy outfit???

Would it be money well spent for someone like myself who knows what kinda pitures he wants to take but still hasn't quite figured out what all the buttons do???

DigitalBeginners have been around a good while now. They're used by both Canon and Nikon as official trainers, and are also certified. I know a few people who have done some of their courses and can highly recommend them.

I've never done one with them myself, but have met Dave (owner/trainer) on occasions and he is very professional.

    Cool, might try one so.

It can only help me in the long run I suppose.

There will be a Beginners Course at the Dublin Camera Club starting in September. It's a 10 week course for €100 & covers Digital & Film. It runs on a Wednesday night (two classes, one at 18.30 the other at 20.30) at 10 Lower Camden St, D2.

I will post more details when the enrolment opens.

just to let you know that this is not a finance scheme. its called flexi rent. my brother just got caught with it its a pure scam. you sign up thinkin your gettin the item on hire purchase but your actually only renting it. my bro bought a laptop under this scheme got a receipt and signed for 1000 euro agreement. got terms and conditions recently in the post his new balance is 1864 euro over 3 years but that is only the rental price. if at the end of the 3 years he wishes to purchase the laptop from flexi rent he will have to make them an offer. if they do not accept and i quote from a member of harvey norman staff " they will take it back and dump it ". so be warned people its a total rip off
