Hi there, I have just tried to install a printer on to my laptop (Inspiron/6400) and a massage popped up. "Operation could not be completed. Print spooler service is not running".

I do not know what this means so any advice please. Bear in mind I am not very techy.

I did have the printer installed at one stage but for some reason it is no longer installed if that makes any difference.

right click My Computer choose Manage\services & applicantions\services then scroll down the list of services and find print spooler right click and then choose restart service

thanks for that but when I click to restart a message with " could not start the print spooler service on local computer. Erroe 2: the system cannot find the file specified."

    does this make any sense?

    thanks

I think you might be better off uninstalling the printer and reinstalling

    1. Power off the printer
    2. Click start, control panel, printers & faxes and delete the printer.
    3. Re-install the printer with the original driver disc or download the drivers

Tbh there does not seem to be a printer to uninstall. When I check it on the control panel there is no printer detected.

I have tried to install it using the drivers as suggested but I am getting an incomplete installation message.

Run "sfc /scannow" from the start/run and let it scan windows for any missing files. You may need your Windows cd at hand.

You didn't say what OS you had?? XP? Vista?
Are you running the setup logged in as admin?

Also, check for a LexBce Server service and, if you have it, make sure it's disabled.

Also check that the RPC service is started.

If all else fails, download Kyocera Driver Deleter Utility
Run deleter.exe and delete any printers you see with the tool.
Highlight "Orphans" and again delete (Actions/Delete)

Reboot PC and again, check that all the above services are running. Fingers crossed they all are and go ahead and re-install the printer from CD. (Have the printer disconnected until your promted to connect it)

I would actually download the latest drivers while your at it.
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software3/COL8880/mp-23418-1/drv_gc_w01_ENU.exe

    Good luck!

    The_Edge,
Thanks for the info. As I am afraid I will not do it correctly as I am not the techno type I will ask my OH to have a go tomorrow evening. Although I do know that RPC is running has a 'started' status. I had already check this earlier. I am impressing myself but do not want to tempt faith just yet. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Do you know off hand why this has happened?
My virus protection lapsed and I fear I downloaded something that may have done damage as the pc ran a bit slow for a while.

If you have 30min we can give it a bash now. You've manged to check a few services....better then some people I deal with. ;)

You can create a system restore point so if all goes tits up we can restore to when all was well.

Is it Windows XP you have there?

Hard to say what's caused this to be honest. I'd say it's unlikey it virus/malware related but again I can't be 100% there.

    If you type...

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

.....in the run box up comes system restore. Go ahead and create a restore point for today....You can call it anything you like

Ok I bit the bullet and have created a restore. Aptly called 'restore for titsup'.
    I am running on XP.

    what next?

    Disconnect and/or turn off printer.

Download the attached file (Printer Deleter.zip) and save it to you desktop. Double click it and choose to extract to desktop. You have a folder now called "Printer Deleter"

Run the file "deleter.exe" in the folder.

    01fs0.jpg
Click the plus beside Printer [1]

Highlight any printers and click "Actions\Delete"
Highlight "Orphans" [2] and again click "Actions\Delete"

Say yes to any warnings you may recieve. Close window and give the machine a restart.

Download this file (Right-click/save to desktop)

Once saved, run the file and it will begin the printer setup.
Only connect/turn on the printer when prompted.

Do this much and see how you get on. ;)

Well the lap top is close to takinga trip out of the nearest window!
We hit a problem with your instructions. It would not download the deleter file. After about 10mins it keeps hanging.

I am now beginning to think I should get a computer doctor to have a look at it.

    10min!!
The file is less then 500Kb. The print driver I post is about 100 times as large.

Hmm, have you tried grabbing it from this link?
    http://jernstrom.org/site/news.php?item.17

You *may* be charged an arm & leg for what could be, quite possibly, a simple fix.

    Close that window!

sorry I got it wrong being a techno bimbo....there wasn't a prob downloading it at all. the problem was installing it. Thats when it started to hang.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,287 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

Installing which, the printer driver or running the printer deleter?

When it hangs, what do you do to get back up and running?

TBH my head is melting over this. I am off for a few weeks hols at the weekend and on m y return I will tackle this. I also have 2 home pc's that are dead. 1st one died and the OH thought he could revive it using the kids pc. Result....nada!
So this print spooler thingy doesn't surprise me at all.

But sincere thanks for all your help. I just think it's one of those things you prob have to see to figure it out. Failing that....the nearest open window.

    Again thanks!

    O

No worries. Feel free to give this a bash again whenever.

The edge, just to let you know I finally got my print spooler problem sorted out today. What an ordeal. I have tried every thing recommeded on all the sites I found with no luck. Eventually I just reinstalled my windows xp and bingo it is recognising the printer. This time I did not bother to install drivers.

    Thank you for your advice.

    try this for XP

    open notepad

    type this below

    NET STOP SPOOLER
    NET START SPOOLER

    save it as spooler restart.bat

note to do this using vista you'll need to do as above and then right click on it and goto properties then advanced then check "run as administrator"

    Double click it
