I use it and like it. More so since I started contracting and nearly every agent wants you to join there networks. The recommendations, if you get good ones, can be very helpful.

Yea I set up a profile a couple of years ago when I was thinking about changing jobs. It's kind of like an online resume, but it's also a good way to keep connections with people you used to work with but either you or they have moved company.

Since the start of the year I've found that recruitment agencies in Ireland have cotton'd onto it's potential. I've received a half dozen job offers since January. Now admittedly, I'd say my profile fits a certain type that they are after, and so anyone else in Dublin who fit that profile on LinkedIn also received the same offer as me. It's a form of spamming I suppose, but 1 or 2 of the offers were interesting, so harmless enough, and 6 in 6 months isn't any inconvenience.

I'm a contractor also & I find it quite good for keeping in touch with others in industries that I work in.

It depends on what you would use it for yourself though.

I don't know if it's helped my career, but I do like it. Probably just because it's a handy way to keep my contacts from work organised, without being super-poked / have sheep thrown at me / whatever the hell happens on facebook. I don't think it's a service I would pay for though.

I've got the same spam, it's unsoliciated, and the recruiter in question could clearly see that I'd recently started a new job.

That and the generic message sent shows a total lack of professionalism (which is something else - in that industry)

Yea but +90% of recruitment people have no professionalism.

Once I decided on what I was doing, I sent an email to all the agencies / people I was dealing with, asking for them to remove my CV and contact details from their database, as per my rights under the Data Protection Act. And in fairness, most of them were pretty sharpish doing it and I stopped getting the calls.

can be useful in both keeping track of former colleagues and getting the odd call about jobs, i've found most of the recruiters who do use it to be "head hunter" types rather than spammers. I've had one job offer as a result of being on it, so would have to say it helps.
