External Hard Drive Recovery - Advice Sought

I've quite stupidly dropped my external hard drive (Iomega 360 gig) and it won't work.
When I turn it on it makes harsh noises so I reckon it's physical damage as opposed to logic.
I've looked around at data recovery services and was quoted anywhere between 400 - 800 euro.

    Why is it so expensive?

Does anyone know of any recovery services that don't cost an arm or a leg?

    Cheers
