I went to see this afternoon and I have to admit I was pretty disappointed.

Jason Bateman was very good but I had this nagging feeling throughout that somebody else should have been playing the role...however, by the time the movie had ended, I felt he was the movies only real saving grace.

The plot took and unexpected twist half way through, and personally, I thought it was a terrible one. As for the first half, the movie started off well but they, in my opinion, went about the whole ****ty superhero thing very poorly.
Any interesting elements of the plot were quickly brushed over and some seemed tacked on at the end for the sake of fitting the superhero movie clichés.
I also hated the awl Cloverfield cam, (slight shaking followed by super zoom!) and the constant youtube plugging.
Infact the whole movie felt one huge Will Smith plug, a person who I am not particularly fond of anyway.

Some elements were good, like the score, the unusually well placed swearing/script, Jason Bateman as I said above and the special effects.

If you've felt interested then you should probably check it out, but I don't think you will be impressed.

I believe the marketing on this one ****ed up. The trailers painted it purely as a comedy, when the film has a lot of weightier elements, such as Hancock's alcoholism, and there was many very dramatic scenes. Supposedly Hancock had been severly clipped in order to avoid an R rating in the states, and it all screams of a film the studio didn't know what to do with, or how to market it.

I think it's really a very good film, but most of my criticism with it lie in some poor characterisation, which probably lies in it being trimmed down to fit the studio's percieved audience. The supposed change of pace that Hancock 'suffers' from isn't the issue, it's what audiences were told about the film that's the issue.

Yeah agree 100% with Karl that the marketing ballsed up what had the potential to be a classic.

Went to see it yesterday and was very disappointed. The first 20 minutes or so where Hancock is basically a bum is quality and quite funny, exactly how the tv trailers make out. After that though it went horribly downhill and turned into pretty much a love story
about wanting someone but not being able to have them
    .

Not a Will Smith fan either.

If I had been given a choice I would have waited for DVD.

It will be interesting to see if the unrated DVD is any improvement.

i dunno if id bother with it unrated, fgrom what ive heard what they cut out was hancock revealing himself to little kids and flying about naked! not xcomething i really wanna see!

i do have to say that the first half hour or so is great, packed with laughs, but then it just goes totally downhill, the "twist" is obvious and terrible, and the love story is just boring! did anyone notice that
when he went to kiss her she threw him threw a wall (they didnt kiss) but leter on when she says they are brother and sister he says somethin like "a sister and brother dont kiss the way you kissed me"

First half houur was fun, seeing Hancock making a balls of stuff. Onc he got rehabilitated it started to suffer. The drama bits were poorly done and the shaky cam was distracting. Shaky cam is good in action scenes, not so much at the breakfast table.
    ...and the twist. FFS

I thought it was entertaining enough, but the trailer made it out to be a film that it clearly isn't and I wasn't really in the right mindset for it.

I thought it was "ok", but it left me wondering what was missing. It's as if they cut something out that made it all hang together. I shoved a quick review up here:

i actually quite enjoyed it to be honest with ya. i reckon that the director's cut will be much better.

also, how hot was charlize theron when she
turned into storm from xmen half way through?

also, every time her and jason batemen were on screen together i kept singing "Mr. F" to myself. gotta watch those episodes again..

    Agree totally.
I loved the different road for this superhero regarding alcoholism and the fact he's not appreciated by the people in the beginning. I thought the score was quite good and the special effects were great. A couple of good 'acting' scenes also propped the movie up for me.

No, it's an original superhero, not based on any pre-existing comic book series.

Some elements were good, like the score

I dont know that was the first thing that struck me about the film that was really really broken.

The opening scene the film goes from, smooth swing to hip hop to epic super hero movie score in the space of a minute which was really jarring. Kept it up throughout the film, was very irritating.

On the rest of the film, Will Smith phoned this one home, didnt seem to putting much into the character at all.

Charlize theron did show that she needs to be put in tight spandex and danced around as a superhero (Wonderwoman or supergirl?) she fitted very comfortable with the I have super powers b*tch role quite well.

Aside from that, it was ok I guess, like everyone else it started off well, I was expecting the twist (again freaking trailers!) but I felt their attempt to explain it all (while keep an element of mystery) was pretty poor.

Did anyone else feel the message of the film was a bit mixed
Charlize Therons character wont be with will smith, her supposed destined true love because, a) he has amnesia, b) she will become mortal when with him and die and c) she's in love with someone else. Now a) is a stupid reason, b) is sort of a selfish depressing live forever alone then one lifetime with love reason and c) feels like it was shoe horned in to stop her looking like a b*tch for reason b), honestly what happens next will be seriously painful, her husband is going to grow old and die, her adopted son is going to grow up, grow old and die, and after all that pain and suffering she is going to go to hancock? Wow is he going to have a depressing mortal life with her because she will be crying herself to sleep every night.

Well I think it was also because when Hancock and her are together, people come after him through her. She said of all of their "race" he was the one most like a genuine superhero and that he was needed to be just that.

I thought that was one of the best aspects of the film, the living forever part was just icing or a severe downside, depending on how you look at it.

i enjoyed it on whole the major flaw really is the last third or so seemed tacked on as an after thought.
if it ended at its natural conclusion
    the bankjob, hancock rehabilated
it would of been a better movie with the beginning lengthened out to be the movie and would of been a whole lot funnier him messing up a lot more and jason batemans carachter trying to repair the damage.

    thats my two cents

awful movie overall. First half hour had potential but it was like the writers sold out to hollywood and gave us much thereafter.

Didnt think it was funny and the "twist" was made ridiculously obvious from the moment they met. "oooh lingering camera shot on character, something must be fishy!"

This should help explain a few things to you folks, as it helped me understand how this film went from very promising to standard Hollywood ****e. Apparently in the original script Hancock starts out as a borderline psycho aswell as an alcoholic. But after 10 years of the script being cut to bits and rehashed (to make it more marketable), the movie is what we ended up getting.

    The Truth About "Hancock"

Yeah i had heard that about the script. Similar to I am Legend
