Sound Problem

    Hi guys,

Dunno if this is the right forum for this, but I've got a set of Altec Lansing computer speakers, One sub and 4 surround speakers. The problem is only 2 speakers and the sub is working, the rear speakers wont work for some reason. I think it may be to do with the drivers, but when I try updating them it just up dates the ones for the 2 speakers. Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Firstly,
Should there be sound coming from the surround speakers? What are you playing on it?
A regular CD won't have and program material for the surround channel.

Well before, if I played a CD, i had it so that the sound would come out of all the speakers, yeah. Theyre on a new PC for the last while, but I only noticed last night that it was happening. There just is no option to turn on all 4 on this PC like there was on the old PC.

What ouputs are you using? Stereo from pc to speaker amp? Digital from pc the speaker amp? Or 5 seperate outputs from the pc the amp? Maybe a problem with the soundcard not supporting surround sound. Or maybe there is a hidden setting on your audio controller utility to force the 4 speakers to output the sound even if the audio is not in surround sound. I would advise you to play a surround sound file and see what happens. However it doesn't look like you have a 5.1 setup so there may be a problem playing 5.1 coded files.

The speakers I have are Altec Lansing ADA745 95 watt 4.1 and the sound card I'm using is SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.

To be honest I'm not even bothered if the "surround sound" is on, I just want to have all 4 speakers and the sub at least working, and no matter what way I switch around the cables this wont work!

I'm pretty sure its just a software issue, I have the black and green cables put in the right sockets, there's also an orange socket, a grey socket, and a blue socket on the PC.

I have all the latest drivers etc.

    Thanks,
    Kav

What brand/model is your PC ?
I've only ever seen that codec run on modest sound cards, often laptops.

Can you tell what sound card you have from Device Manager ?
If it's capable of driving 5.1, there should be sample surround files or even a speaker setup program.

    Vista?
Have you set the speakers to Quad 4.1?

And in device manager it says thats the sound card, nothing else in there! I'm using a Dell XPS 420 so it should certainly be capeable of doing it.

    Thanks,
