no microphone sound

hi the microphone is not working . it seems not to be their ,it is and in the right port , but is not registering on the computer ?done the basic checks but lost at the moment , any ideas out their please . i was trying to use it with windows live , the camera works fine the speakers also just not the microphone so have to…

is it windows vista your using?
I noticed sometimes when i plug out the mic with vista that i need a system reboot for some strange reason
