Why the brain?

Why is the brain the staple diet of the Undead? Easily edible for their rotting jaws, doesn't require much chewing? What is the nutritional content of the brain? High in water and not much else?

Do Zombies have a preference of brain? Are there different types of brain with subtle differences in flavour? Like wine, do some zombies prefer freshly developed brain while others prefer the flavour and texture of a brain nicely matured in a skull barrel?

Does the mental capacity of the victim affect the depth of flavour in a brain?

But then maybe Zombies aren't bothered with how it tastes once they're munching on anything remotely brain-like. After all maybe they don't have a sense of taste or do they??... *Cue twilight zone music*

Only in the Return of the living dead world its brains

as they're the only thing to stop the pain of rotting alive

in other worlds, its just general cannibalism, aka the need to feed

Supposedly 90% of their brain is burnt out. How they would have any hunger is beyond me. They should have terrible movement and should die not long afterwards. That's the way zombies are supposed to be. Slow moving and cumbersome and (hopefully) easy to kill, shotgun or magnum shot to the head. Decaying body and head blows up. That's the way it works in the Resident Evil world.

have you ever TRIED brains? they are great! i dont see why its such a mystery why zombies would want to eat them.

i think the brain is the weakspot but not necessarily the food of choice. the heart is probably tastier. however brains come prepackaged in a skull and make a nice pop noise when you pop open the skull to get the juicy brains.

    It's just their newest diet.

Give it time, they'll be back to intestines soon enough.

Well if you think about it it makes sense, here they are stumbling about knowing only hunger, are they going to want to share food? I don't think so, so how else do they ensure someone they feed on doesn't turn into another zombie post mortem except by destroying the brain by eating it.

Wouldn't that show a strong level of intelligence? On their own I'm sorry but it's a no no for me, if they were being controlled by someone/something else than I'm all for that.

Maybe it's simple instinct to consume brain?

No more so than any other creature that will kill competitors to protect it's food, which even some insects will do.

From a close study of the two I keep chained to the wall in my basement (my brother tells me they are his Hippy friends but I know better) one can take an educated guess.

Zombies chow down on the brains of their victims out of the instinctive need for serotonin (the feel good hormone in the brain). Who wouldnt? Serotonin acts as an anti-depressant and I can't think of anything more depressing than being undead. I mean talk about being a marginalized member of society!

    The empirical evidence for this is as follows;
    1) the inherent depressing state of rotting slowly while still shambling around Tescos.
    2) The only really nutrient of value (aside from high protein content) in the brain is serotonin (and possible certain secretions by the pituatary gland)
    3) Zombies make that groaning, moaning noise. Previously this has been ignored as a symptom of the condition of zombification but is actually the same sound produced by chronic depressives and offices workers on train journeys.
    4) Braaaaaaiiiinnnnsss

If anyone has any further data they wish to share please do so, we need all the knowledge we can accumulate.

It is easy to confuse the too. You just gotta stick to your Guns on this front.
Best way to check is set them on fire. If they roll around panicing then they screaming stuff like "IT burns!" "Oh god help me!" Then you probalbly got stuck with hippies.
Besides no court will do you over supposed hippies being offed.

This reminds me of the salmon of knowledge, Maybe the zombies think they will get wiser if they eat brains? :D
