So The Offspring return with another studio album. 'Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace' comes four years after the hit and miss that was 'Splinter'. That album had some excellent songs (singles 'Hit That' and 'Can't Get My Head Around You', and 'The Noose') and some fun songs (I personally love 'Spare Me The Details') mixed with some absolute shit ('Da Hui' and 'The Worst Hang Over Ever'). So how do they fair this time around?

Overall probably better. There is something for everybody on this album from cheesy ballads ('Kristy, Are You Doing Ok?', 'Fix You' and 'A Lot Like Me') to the happy go lucky songs ('Nothingtown') to some proper old school Offspring attitude ('You're Gonna Go Far, Kid' and opener 'Half-Truism').

First single 'Hammerhead' hasn't impressed me much at all. It's a little too bland and I agree with the reviewers who said that it's just too long. 'You're Gonna Go Far, Kid' is rumoured to be the next release which is good news because it's probably the stand out track on the album.

'Stuff Is Messed Up' has a chance to become a live favourite with its drum intro and catchy 'Shit is fucked' chorus, a line that will no doubt be scrawled across every third year emo's school bag come September.

'Trust In You' bears a stark resemblence to the song 'Smash' from the album of the same name, particular in the verses, which is good in my book.

Overall the band have proved that they still have something to offer after a career that has lasted over 20 years. Being in their mid-40s also hasn't stopped the band from still being one of the best live performers around.

While it is never going to come even close to 'Smash' in terms of quality, this album is definitely worth a listen as there should be at least one song for everybody.

    Overall: 7 out of 10

I wasn't really expecting a lot from them this time around but they surprised me. I think overall the album is much better than Splinter.

My favourite track on the album would have to be "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid". I like the more ballad-like songs, they seem to pull them off pretty well.

Only started listening to them a couple of years back. First two albums are decent, but thats about it. I have heard good things about the new one though so I'll give it a go.

OK. I just took a listen to "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" and as predicted it is the generic watery crap the offspring have descended into in the last 10 years. While Americana had some decent tracks they should have called it a day after Ixnay...
