Been out of golf for 7 years or so until about 6 - 8 weeks ago and finally got my new handicap

Got 7 which seems ok as gives me a bit of room to mess up for a while while still be able to play junior scratches...

Anyhows I was wondering does anyone have a list of the upcoming junior scratches coming up??

    Thanks

Yeah 7 is a good start point for coming back to it. I got 9 and headed toward 10 before being cut to 8. With the computer systems and new rules your h'cap certainly seems to fluctuate more these days than it did when we used to play.

    Good luck with it.

Yeah seems to alright looking at the lads I play with...

Gives me a bit of a buffer to hack around for a while as not played a comp in years but going to try play Lucan and Ashbourne (My old home course) over the next few weeks..

How did you find coming back to competitive golf? As I know I have been a little loose at times and can't really afford this if I wanna start dropping

I was in the same boat this time last year. Started playing again properly last June having played maybe 10-20 rounds over the previous 5 years or so.

Really struggled at the start. Was previously a solid 3 handicapper. When i came back i was given 5 but didn't shoot a single below handicap round all year (including practice!) and went up to 6.

Played through the winter though and been working pretty hard at it and i'm starting to get somewhere now hopefully. Playing consistently below my handicap and starting to shoot under par rounds and stuff which is a great feeling. Handicap is starting to come down now too.

I found it pretty frustrating coming back. Bits of my game that used to be really good were gone. Used to come off the course in some real grumpy moods. Just had to stick with it though.

Biggest problem i found is not having the same group of guys to play with. Playing with guys around the same handicap or lower can really bring the best out of you. That's why the scratch cups are so good.

Playing Ashbourne for the first time, any tips?

Well I came back with a slightly different approach ie: to not really worry about getting low or winning or getting on interclub teams etc. I'm sure I'll get a bit lower and play Junior and Barton Cup next year and I like to practice and hit balls but my attitude is pretty casual.

Given that, going back to playing competitions is no big deal and Im enjoying them even though I'm shooting pretty crap scores.

Keep it on the fairways but be aware of where the trouble is as there is normally areas to bail out if needs be.. (get strokesaver as there is hidden trouble on a number of holes)

The greens are normally nice and pretty easy to read but can be firm

The 1st is driveable so take it over the right bunkers with a touch of draw to ensure it doesn't scoot off the left side

On 14 long par 5 aim at the big tree on the left as the fairway pulls everything down towards the river

On 17 if you are feeling brave cut it over the hill there is a Bunker on the other side if you are not long enough but if you make it a very good chance at making it in 2

I just put myself down for that Junior scratch so hopefully can do myself some justice out there..
