My Home Pc is gone terrible. I switch it on, and could wait half an hour before i can open firefox. The virus scan i did with norton antivirus found nothing. And there's like 20gb of hard drive left. I don't know if it's memory, or what is causing it to be so slow.
I've tried defragmenting it and running chkdsk and they didnt help.

    Here's the hijackthis log.

    How much ram it got?

Norton may not be helping either.

    192mb

192MB of RAM is really low, to get XP any way decent you need in my opinion at least 512MB of RAM. What are the exact specs of the computer? Also, Norton is a big system hog. If I were you I'd get rid of all norton/Symantec software and replace the anti virus with AVG or Avast free editions.

    Without a doubt.....

Symantec sucks donkey balls, big time. Look at it this way Firefox requires around 80mb of RAM to run (depending on how many tabs you open) and I would easily say that Norton is taking up around 100mb of RAM to run between that poxy always-on live update service etc...

Remove symantec and install AVG free and I'd look at upgrading your RAM very soon. You are just above the minimum to run Windows XP...

Agreed. RAM upgrade really needed. That or its time for a new computer.

RAM is cheap enough these days, try shop4memory.com or crucial.com/eu for prices. Chuck Norton and grab one of the free ones AVG, Anti-Vir or avast!

The only way to remove nortons is to use their own removal tool which you can get here http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
RAM is cheap as chips at the moment. To get the correct RAM Crucial have a little utility which should tell exactly what type of RAM you need. http://www.crucial.com/

whoa 192mb ram is really far too low for XP, 512mb is really a minimum in this day and age and by minimum i mean bare minimum 1gb is pretty much standard.
2gb is the norm and 4gb is for gamers but 8gb is just over the top :p

What are the rest of your PCs specs?
I dumped norton years ago, it takes up more than half your ram and does nothing more than AVG free and Avast.

it's the RAM. without a doubt man.

i find a program called hwinfo32 is great for determining what type of ram you have installed in your machine, it is faster than the crucial scan,

    check it out

Personally myself I used CPU-Z on PCs where i dont know what type of ram its running on,
might be a bit too advanced though than crucial!

Tells you heap loads more like the date of manufacture etc

    +1 for CPU-Z

    +2 for CPU-Z . Great little program .

Also 512Mb RAM is in practise a bare minimum for running XP (even M$ recommended minimum is 256Mb though their 'official' minimum is 128Mb , IIRC ) . Norton/Symantec will throttle the life out of any system so follow the advice to get rid of it using the tool suggested by greglo23 .

I'd also look into how and why mywebsearch is on your machine . If it came bundled/embedded in something you have no need for I'd suggest getting rid of it and any associated software (you may need to start a thread in virus and malware for good advice on this) . For your info ... http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml . A decent security suite would/should have picked this up when it installed , which is another good reason for dumping Norton ...

After reformatting a 2Ghz 256mb ram with XP it was still dog slow.. I want to throw it out the window. Seriously, you need at least 512MB Ram to get performance out of XP.
