Just looking for some medical opinions.

Seen Probiotics for sale in the chemist for during and after you're on a course of antibiotics to help your digestive & general well being.

Now last year I was on anti-biotics a few times, the doctor never once suggested them or any of the pharmacists serving me.

    What do people here think?

Think it's generaly accepted that they are a good thing to take after Antibiotics .Doctors unless they are getting a pay back dont reccomend them ,at least mine never has .Perhaps there worried we wont go see them to get the antibiotics which some give out like smarties ? perhaps i am just being cynical

There is no clear evidence base for using probiotics with antibiotics overall, hence not always recommended. Only in C. Diff colitis which is caused when antibiotics deplete all gut flora and a very resistant organism is given the option to grow is there some evidence. It would seem logical though that if you deplete your gut flora as a side effect with antibiotics, then replacing it may be a good idea.

It's prbably just as good for you to have a yogurt or two. A lot of things are sold that are just full of bull.

I thought that there isn't a clear case for oral probiotics at all?

There is an article in Science (last month?) highlighting a dutch trial where probiotics were used on pancreatitis patients at risk to sepsis.

It was a blind study and when the results were unblinded, the mortality rate for the placebo group was 10%, the mortality rate for the probiotic group was 16%, signifcantly higher.

    Hi yeah,

    I can't recommend probiotics enough.
I read this article today and it has good info in it

Basically it says how you need a balance of 85% to 15% of good to bad bateria. Probiotics help to keep this balance as well as fermentated foods and nutritional supplement.
