Was taken out on a Rib today to capture some Yachting action, was fairly scary bouncing all over the place!

    Hi.

very nice shots. I would, however, recommend that you straighten the horizon in number 1 to make it a killer of a shot.

There is a blotch in the top right hand corner of number 2 which you should consider cleaning up.

I think the horizon in 3 is very slightly off as well.

Other than that, in general I really like the composition of all three shots and number 1 stands above the other two compositionally.

Great going on shooting from a RIB. I got very sick teh last time I tried to use a camera in a less than stable surrounding. n

There are two blemishes in the first one as well. Top left corner, and a little further down the LHS.

i'm not from the sailing world but like first two posters, i do like the first the best. As a suggestion simply use your curves tool in your post processing software and apply a slight 's' bend to it. Then bump the contrast ever so slightly. It creates a nice strong image and almost gives a blue-ish sky. I think the major difficulty that you've encountered through the set is the greyness of the sky. You have some blue in there though so there something to work with. Nice though.

I agree. Were you on shore or out in a boat?

Great shots but for me the 2nd is my favourite, its excellent. You can feel the movement and the dof is perfect. Theres a real 3d quality to it. Nice work.

    Hi nice pics,

Now for some (I hope) constructive c+c from a sailor's pov:

In general, very general, 'regular' shots of single yachts are a bit easier from the windward side where there's a good view of the crew, gear, lines and sail curves. Frontal shots are better when there's a few boats in background forming a composition with dof. Also, action on the deck is often a good subject if you can get it - it's awkward as the deck either is obscured by sails when taking from leeward or tilting away when taking from windward and a rib won't have much elevation for you.

Personally, I think the gybe/wing mark/buoy is the best place. You could have a line of spinnakers coming towards you combined with side on shots of boats who have rounded the mark and with busy sailors on deck.

Pic 1. Spinnakers are always great, but it would be nicer if you were about 45 degrees to your right giving a nice mix of spinnaker shape and colours and the cut lines on the on the mainsail and jib (foresail). Also missed opportunity for a composition of some more spinnakers in the background with nice dof.

Pic 2. Very, very nice. Nice little bow wave, man 'up to stuff', dof. Pity the 2 spinnakers in background weren't a bit more to the left and if you were a bit more to your right it would have been perfect.

Pic 3. It's a nice composition of the sea/sky 2 yachts and the buoy. However, both yachts have flapping/twisted sails which I reckon is a bad idea from a sailor's pov - it's just not elegant, unless there's something else going on.

suggest your try converting to either B&W or Sepia to see how they look

Certainly an improvement and a lot more vibrance in the photo.

Improved from the first but i'm not sure i like the crop - it appears way too close to the boat. Again thats from a non sailing perspective but i think the new crop now detracts from the overall composition. Contrast / colour work is nice but it could go a tad more i'd think (imho).

Agree with AnCatDubh regarding the crop.

the recrop and colour make a big difference.

I agree with the others on the new crop. You have a little bit to play with on the original shot to give a bit more room to the boat on the RHS.
