Matte Vs Gloss?

Which do you like better when getting prints made?

Nine times out of ten, matte looks better, in my opinion.

Gloss is way better!Shame bigger gloss prints come at a price!Matte is growing on me though

Matte, but the proper one. Not that ususal s###e you get, taht is only gloss with texture. That was the most satysfying feeling to come back to darkroom when the proper matte dried. The feeling of the texture cannot be replaced.
So that's I can't vote here. No matte from labs.

love a nice matte finish, but still looking for somewhere decent to develop. since photo store (upper level blanchardstown) closed, i haven't found the same quality anywhere. still searching though. ;o)

Well, i hate to be a pain

BUT

I prefer Pearl, which is kinda half way between.

Its more durable than both, has more dynamic range than matt.

Well this is for nice colour stuff, for fine art type B&W i prefer hahnemuhle photorag 308 smooth which is one of the best matt inkjet papers you can buy


Its silly expensive but its soooooo worth it


I use both ilford and fuji pearl papers the fuji is quite a heavy paper @ 290 but again more expensive than most but again soooo worth it


Gloss papers have the most dynamic range, but the lowest longevity figures, even a very good gloss print may only last 30 years (something like fuji crystal archive)

When I get a print made in a lab how is it printed? Inkjet?

it depends if its a wet print, it not inkjet, so for example photobox use digital heads to print images onto photographic paper, where as i print using an epson large format printer

What about somewhere like gunns? You just bring the cd and put it in the machine and they send it to their printers out the back, hows that printed?

most of those kind of places use a digital mini-lab, so printed onto photographic paper. I dont know specifically about gunns, but a good guess would be that


you do have to be very careful, some of those kinds of prints really dont last that long
