Just a few questions I have relating to the above..Picked Bio1, Bio2, Chemistry and hope to do chemistry as moderatorship. Failed Chemistry by 5%.
Wouldn't make a post about this any other year, but failing a subject in 2nd year science seems to relegate you to the bottom of the choosing pile in terms of moderatorships.. Basically I'm just worried I won't get my choice of Chemistry and be forced into something I dont want, which is basically everything else if I'm honest. Is there anyone with any insight into what gets filled up? Does this happen with most courses? Any way around it? Am I wasting my time even studying for the repeat..?

You'll be grand, to be honest. Chemistry is one of the very low-demand courses, I'd say you'll get in, once you pass the supplemental.

I just finished 3rd year chemistry, you should get in no problem in Sept. This year there was only 12 people in the class, and I think there's 20 spaces. Good luck in the exams!

    25 spaces I believe...Thanks for the replies.

I just finished 3rd year Micro. I know with us last year it was physiology, molecular medicine and mostly biochem that filled up first so if you failed any exams you didn't really have a hope of getting into them. But like other posters have said with Chemistry it should be no problem as long as you pass your supps. Good luck!

There have been 16 first choice applications for chem this year (including yours if it was first chioce) so if you assume some people who have it as second choice will also be offered it then their should be ~20 in the year so if you pass the repeats you should be fine, if your really woried send me an email (you should know it, i am the chem sf teaching fellow)

There's some nice inside information there.

But to throw a potential spanner in the works. Why do you want to spend another 2 years studying chemistry (much tougher chemistry too) when you found it difficult to pass 2nd year chemistry? Do you simply want to be a chemist and that's it? It's different courses for horses etc. but the vast majority of people who fail 3rd year and struggle in 4th year scrapping 3rds etc. are, to the best of my knowledge are from Chemistry, Physics and Micro. I just have to ask why do you want to put yourself through that heart ache?

Well I wouldn't say I found it difficult to pass chemistry. Poor planning with the subject admittedly, spending too much time on other subjects, a false sense of security led to it. To be honest, I'm surprised with the result I got and thought I'd pass. I've been more or less set on chemistry since I picked my SF subjects. I did best on it in first year and didn't find anything impossible this year.
I see from the outside it would be a bit questionable to pick the subject I failed in, but I'm not just picking it for the hell of it. Can't find any other available subject that I'm interested in that would be available to me after repeats

Actually only 1 person failed micro this year that must be some kind of record!

I failed Bio 1 last year (along with 62 other people I think) and felt exactly the same way as you feel now, but as people above me have already said Chemistry is not a high demand course. Molecular Medicine was the most popular last year I think, along with Physiology, Neuro and Immunology - it does vary from year to year of course, for example last year there was still space left in Zoology for the repeaters but the previous year demand for Zoology really outstripped the places available - but I think you should be guaranteed a place in Chemistry if you pass the repeats. At some stage you will be sent a new form to fill in your revised course choices, and that will list only the courses with places available. And at least you've only one subject to repeat so you'll be able to concentrate just on that, I know it sucks that you couldn't compensate as you would have been able to in first year with 35%, but you can definitely pass this. If you haven't done it already, I'd advise going into college and getting a breakdown of your marks for each paper, this way you can see what areas you really need to pull up on. Good luck!

Hey you will be fine. The same thing happened to me. I failed chem by around 6% and had to repeat. I still got a place in the end. There seems to be more of a demand for biochem etc. Just a word of warning though, its a tough one! I continued with chem for my moderatorship and it was really tough. Unless you are really passionate about it then it is a difficult degree. The teaching standard is very high, but there is a huge emphasis on research especially in the final year. Re your repeat, you are at a point now where its not too late to leave. I had my doubts about chemistry and in hindsight, should have been brave enough to leave. Now I am stuck with a degree that I worked ridiculously hard for, and that I dont even want! That said, if you do decide to go ahead with your repeats, one of the best places to get help is from postgrad students. Its not that long since they were doing the same course, and they dont charge ridiculous fees for a grind. You should be able to find some in yoiur own college. They also have a good grinds system in the DIT on Kevin street. Whatever you decide to do, the very best of luck. I've been there and I know its scary but you will be fine. :o
