Can't setup vnc or ssh on home network

    Hi
I have just installed a home server running ubuntu. I have installed ssh and tightvnc on it and have confirmed that they are listening on the correct ports using a port.

Unfortunately my windows pc cannot connect to it. I am able to ping it but cannot connect using ssh or tightvnc.

My setup is as follows. I have a router with a four port switch in it. I have connected both computers to it and since it is a switch I assume it will work as LAN.

Any idea why I cannot connect? It's prob not the firewall as I have turned it off on the windows pc. From the router config page I can see that both computers are connected using local addresses. TBH I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be working.

    Thanks,
    Kev

Can you telnet to the assigned port?

if you can ping the ubuntu machine the network connection is fine

what ssh client are you running on the windows machine? putty?

port 22 is the only port you need to open to connect with ssh

Just open port 22 on the firewall of the router.

Ah. I didn't think about the firewall on the router. Will give that a shot.
