creating avi/mpeg files from ripped dvd

Hey, Does anyone know if there is a way to make a ripped dvd into a file thats I could upload to my myspace page (all the material is owned by me so it's not copyright breaching or anything) I have a dvd of a gig of mine and I ripped it but I want to up load it so it needs to be in another format.... any clues?
