Blu-ray playback trouble.

I have my PS3 a couple of weeks but haven't had the chance to watch a full movie on Blu-ray yet, although I have a few. I bought Ratatouille for my son to watch, from Ebay, but when it arrived it wasn't sealed. When we watched it we got about 40 - 50 mins in and it froze. After maybe 5 mins it started playing the end credits. I returned the disc for a refund and ordered it from Play.com. Watching it this morning and the exact same thing is happening.

It will pretty much always freeze at the same spot. If I try to restart the film, sometimes I get a black screen for ~1 minute, then a Playstation error screen "cannot play video" and some error number.

Has anybody come accross anything similar?

Failing that, can anybody tell me what happens in Ratatouille after Collette gives out to Linguini for not keeping his station clean?

Is your PS3 FW updated? 2.36 is the latest version after 2.40 was removed.
Have you tried a regular DVD also, giving the same problem?
Does it play Blu-Ray games fine?

Regular DVDs and DivXs play fine. Games play fine too. I'm wondering if there are two seperate lasers/lenses in the drive. Presumably DVDs and DivXs will be read by a normal red laser, like in a normal DVD drive. Blu-ray games would only be accessing the Blu-ray drive intermittently, whereas a Blu-ray movie would have it on full-time. Maybe the Blu-ray part of my drive is the weak point, crapping out after the above mentioned 40-50 mins.

Actually it sounds like the disc might be dual layered and the drive is crapping out on the transition between layers , there's only one laser by the way ,

It looks like the PS3 drive is faulty , just bring it back for a replacement.

Looks like you're right. Tried the same disc on a mate's PS3 yesterday and it plays perfectly.

Don't suppose anybody knows what Game will be like for returning a month old console? Am I likely to get a straight swap or "we'll have to send it back to Sony, call us in 6 weeks and we should have an answer"?

Credit where it's due. I boxed it up and brought it back to them and they took a new one out of a bundle box and swapped it there and then. He did say that they'd normally test them but he had no way to do it when I was there.

I'm glad I didn't buy online to try and save a few quid. Postage alone would have gobbled up any savings.
