A few weeks ago I was back in Ireland and for my 1st time ever I got pulled up by the Garda for speeding :(. I have a UK driving license though, my mate is telling me that I can ignore the fine I got in the post. In the letter I got it states that there is also a fixed penalty points charge of 2 points - can this be put on a UK license by the Gardai?

Just 1 little note before the more negative(which they are few of course ;)) boardsies see this as an opportunity to have a go please only do so if you have never driven beyond the speed limit ;)

Anyway basically just wondering what my best course of action is and what are the implications.

    i would never speed
i however was researching a book on, lets say; fishing, and during this research i realised that if one was, in the book of course, to be given a speeding fine in the south, from a cam,era car or camera, one could pay the fine and simply get a friend with a northern lisence to say they were driving as their lisence would be safe

strikes me it would be the same for you

i'd pay tho cause they can do all sorta things to people who don't pay (tv lisence absconders on becch warrents spring to mind)

    strikes

I was once actually advised by a garda who wrote a ticket against my uk licence NOT to pay the fine. (he only wrote the ticket as it got he's numbers up and he knew I would not get points-I was only slightly speeding.) Nice fella.

You pay the fine and you get a letter from the RSA along the lines of "if you apply for a Irish license in the future you may start with points or if we find a way of transferring them to the UK license".

You may choose to believe them or not. All I know is that if I were to be applying for an Irish driving license again in the morning and they were to try and load me with points from a speeding ticket over 4 years ago, I'd be crying havok and letting slip the dogs of war.

Too late - they signed the agreement for cross-border and UK application of driving penalties in the last week, iirc......

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Bans first, points a bit down the line. Firstly, they'll have to decide how to translate them with a speeding offence being 3 points in the UK and 2/4 points here depending if you want to waive your day in court.

cheers for the info so far....
So am I correct in assuming that msot people think it's wise to pay this fine and hope that the points don't get transferred to my UK license at a future date.

    I'm in the same boat-

Got pulled over for speeding in Cork lately with NI registered car, NI license and gave him my address here in Belfast.

Just got a fixed penalty notice in the post here today. What's the story if I don't pay- will I get a summons for a court appearance issued here too?

The garda didn't say much either just scribbled down details and told me to slow down so I'm inclined to think it's just a numbers game for them.

BTW the charge says I was driving at 135kmh in 100km zone, now I might have been over but not by that much! Plus he had no camera he was in an unmarked car behind me so don't they need a print out from a camera to convict?

What was curious though was that I was driving behind several other ROI reg cars at same speed coming off the motorway onto dual carriageway at Watergrasshill, why did he not stop those guys when they could have been more easily convicted?

That happened to me when I was on holiday here about 10 years ago before I moved over to live. I was though in a uk reg car.

ok can anybody answer this then:

i have an irish licence but have 8points at the moment, so i took it upon myself to acquire a uk licence (easy) my problem is that i have a fine here in the post from speeding on naas dual carriageway and im wondering what happens if i pay the fine and put my new uk driver licence number on it ????
some help please before the fine goes up..

and no preaching from do-gooders as to why i have 8 points..

OK easy answer is ignore it BUT bear in mind if you get summonsed for not paying the fine and ever come to Ireland again, it could hang round your neck like an Albatross. Speedings one thing, not paying a court fine is something else altogether. Seeing as you gave them your details and they have that in the system Id pay it. You can forget the points though.
