Looking to go to Australia By start of November on a working holiday visa, was wondering if anyone knows how long it takes to apply for the visa. Also if anyone would advise the cheapest flights to get out there ?

I got approved for my Aussie WHV in a matter of hours back in 2004. I applied for it on the Aussie Dept of Immigration website, took about 20-30 mins to do. Got an e-mail a few hours later confirming the visa had been granted.
By the way, you don't actually get your visa until you arrive in Australia. You just go to a desk in the airport where they put the visa in your passport.
As for flights, not sure. I flew with Quantas, who I recommend but are probably at the slightly higher end price wise.

DON'T DON'T use any companies to process your visa
they charge you maybe 50-80quid more and you actually do all the same work.

Use the http://www.immi.gov.au/ to apply, will avg take 24-36hours, and will save you cash!

Firstly. It will only take a couple of hours. I think the web site quotes 24-48 hours.

After that you have on year to enter Australia, and the visa is valid for year from date of entry. Meaning you don't lose any time applying for your visa early so I would suggest doing it now in the unlikely case some problem with it arises (very unlikely).

As for flights have a look at www.australia.ie for an idea for flight prices.

Its true that your visa does not become active until you enter Australia. However I don't believe every airport has an immigration office where you can obtain your visa. I know when I travelled to Melbourne they didn't. So the immigration officer used our passport number, he could see we had a WHV visa and then he stamped our passport. We then had to go the immigration office in Melbourne City to obtain a paper copy of our visa.

This is not something you have to do right away. We got it a couple of weeks later when we started looking for jobs as most places will want to see your visa and photocopy it.

Its not something to worry about but just FYI that you may get your visa in the airport you may have to go get it.
