Was watchin' Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds last night on BBC4, doin' a BBC Sessions. Excellent stuff.

So, one of the Bad Seeds, Warren Ellis, was playing one of these small guitars. He had about 4 of them lined up for the gig.
Any one here shed some light on these?

An electric mandolin, I would imagine.

I think they're just small guitars. They seem to be 6 string and entirely conventional except they looked 3/4 size... the sounded like a "normal" guitar with a permanent capo.

I could swear there was only 4 strings on 'em.

It's a Mandocaster. Only four strings instead of the usual eight on an normal mandolin.

Epiphone currently make a 4 string electric mandolin called the Mandobird.

An 8 string version is available for €195.

Fair enough.... I did say "They seem to be 6 string" as I couldn't make out exactly how many.(I may have been under the influence of something). It has a lovely bluesy guitar sound though....

If you want to see a good Irish band using an electric mandolin, check out Give a Man a Kick.

Great band, I saw them a few years ago when they were supporting PUSA in the music center. :) Didn't see any electric mandolin playing though. :(

Saw them supporting Kerbdog last December. They only used it for one song. Loads of distortion. Sounded weird but really really cool.

I'm almost sure I saw them support Dinosaur jr at the Warwick in Galway a year or two a go. Liked what I saw that night, but no electric mandolin that night[me thinks].

Ellis was gettin' some nice sounds out of it, just never saw one before, cheers lads.
