Situation: I walked up on to the Tee box, I saw a white marker to my right, a rectangular stone painted white, and to my left I saw another white marker, a piece of timber painted white. The Green & Blue markers where the same. I then proceeded to tee off between these markers. My partner was about to do the same when he then noticed that another white marker, another white timber marker was on the far side of the Tee box. So he then teed off from here. I then did the same and used this ball. He then told me that I'm out of the hole, we're playing in a stableford comp, and as he's marking my card, he puts me down for 0pts, whereas I got a 5 on a par 4 (with a shot, ie. index 2).
    Whats the ruling ??????

got this from R&A site - decisions book

"In a stroke play competition, the Committee failed to place a sign at each teeing ground indicating the hole number. As a result, a group which had just finished the 4th hole played from the teeing ground of the 12th hole, rather than the 5th hole. Should the members of the group be penalised under Rule 11-4b in the circumstances?"

Answer: Yes. The Committee was remiss in not placing a sign at each teeing ground. However, each player is responsible for knowing the stipulated round, this being one of the conditions of the competition.

If you played from the wrong tee box then this applies. You could also be covered by this one:

"In stroke play, after finishing the 10th hole, A and B played from the teeing ground of the 15th hole instead of the 11th hole. They realised their error efore completing the 15th hole, returned to the 11th tee and completed the round. What is the ruling?"

Answer: A and B each incurred a penalty of two strokes under Rule 11-4b. They were correct in discontinuing play at the 15th hole and returning to the 11th hole. Strokes played at the 15th hole, when it was played out of order, did not ccount.

Basically 11-4b says 2 shot penalty if corrected. So your 5 would be a 7 and no score.

Yeah, seems I fell foul of Rule 11-4.

Seems wierd that if it was Matchplay I wouldn't incur a penalty, but in Strokeplay I would.......!! :(
Does a Stableford competition come under the Strokeplay umbrella ?

Strokeplay is a format where you count your shots.

Stableford is a scoring system based on that

    Eh........... 'velocity'......??

    Anyway, thanks for your answers.

I suppose I better keep my eyes open in future for dodgy markers on Tee boxes. But this Tee box was unusual, basically 3 sets of 3 Tee markers in a row, green, white & blue, with the painted stone markers causing the confusion.... bummer.

Presumably the painted stone is the point where the hole is measured from, and your teeing off ground will be moved around based on this

I would definitely think the 'stones' are the permanent distance markers, and are quite often not very visible on some courses, especially on Par-3s, as the measurement on the card is from the permanent marker and not the position of the white/blue etc markers that move from day to day.
