    hi

Not wanting to be ripped off here im going to buy and get a tv shipped over from the uk saving around 400 500 euro. they offer a 3 year or 5 year warranty service for additional cost with a 1 year guarantee as standard. my question is should it not be covered anyway for 5 years by the manufacturer or is there a need for it to be covered????

    thanks

The manufacturer can offer you whatever they want. You're not entitled to it. You have your statutory rights and manufacturers guarantee. Every manufacturer offers a guarantee but it's up to them whether it's 1 year or a hundred. Extended warranty is after the guarantee.

Statutory rights are your legal entitlements though.

Are you certain that its compatible with the Irish TV standard? Might only have a UK tuner in it.

It'll need a VHF and UHF tuner if you want to get standard analogue - RTE1,2,TV3,TG4.

Our UK TVs only get TV3 and TG4, not sure about newer ones though.

If you're only ever going to get cable or satellite then this may not be an issue.

You can be pretty certain that, if you get one from mainland Europe, it will have more than enough flexibility in the tuning department. Got a Sony DVD recorder from Germany a while ago. It can be used all over Europe, and it was a lot cheaper than getting one in Ireland or the UK (where the equivalent models only had either UHF (UK) or UHF/VHF (Irl) tuners).

I got a 32" LCD from the UK about 2 years ago, saved about €400 on what it would have cost here, even allowing for delivery. Had it in 4 days too after my payment cleared.

Might be worth asking over on the Home Entertainment forum, probably have more experience there.

Totally off topic but does that mean that as it was incapable of receiving an Irish signal it'd be exempt from a TV license requirement? (Say it was the only TV in the house and a games console was plugged into it)

Nice try but no. You would still pick up half of the Irish stations but not the rest due to no VHF tuner.
