Passat making funny noises

Hey guys, wonder if there is any problem with my passat, its a 02 1.9Tdi 130Bhp with about 85k miles on the clock. Timing belt was done aroudn 47k.

When your sitting at traffic lights it sounds like it is ok and all of a sudden it sounds like another fan starts up and is alot louder than before, it does this on regular occasions(as in all the time, only notice when at lights or stopped. You can hear it then, it sounds like very much like another fan kicking in.

Also when I stop and turn off the car and hop out there is a hissing noise for a while after, sounds like air been released, have been caught a few times thinking I had a puncture.

Car is running ok, no loss in power. No warning light on(computer on board so they have a warning light for everything?. Checked oil etc and all ok. Was serviced about 3-4k ago. No overheating at all, stays the same temp on gauge non-stop. What could it be??????

What it sounds like to me is the crankcase circulation pipe is leaking and is causing the engine to operate at slightly higher tempetures hense the fan kicking in often. Just go to the garage and tell them there is a hissing noise after you switch the engine of. They will know what to do. Its a handy job;)

Will it cause any damage to the engine? Dont know when I will get fixed?

I'd like to know the scientific reason for Plug's statement :-)

Big Nelly, your car sounds perfectly good to me. That's what the cooling fans are, to cool the radiator when the car is stationary and result in extra noise while doing so :-) If the fan didn't kick while idling I would be worried. I take you checked the coolant level and it was fine.

The hissing noise could be a slight leak in vacuum system (that provides brake assistance), totally unrelated by the sound if it. Just drive and stop worrying (unless the temperature gauge moves towards red or there are warning lights).

BTW. If your car has an A/C, one of the cooling fans should be on at all times when the A/C is switched on.

Just sounds like the AC compressor kicking in.

Leave it running with the bonnet open and see if you can identify where the noise is coming from.

Coolant level is perfect, first thing I checked, yeah the car has A/C climate control system which I leave on all the time!!! will have a look at bonnet later

I agree with samih, I get the same fan noise at idle on my tdi 130bhp.
Was in France with it for the last 2 weeks and was conscious of it when I stopped in traffic on hot days......but the poor motor was sweating!

    Don't worry.

If the A/C is on all the time, you will hear the fan and when you switch off your engine without turning your A/C off, you will definately hear a whirring or hiss, which is the A/C stopping. It happens on mine too. Try without the A/C on, (econ on the readout)

I will give it a lash, also noticed as I was driving today there is a sqeaking coming from the front passanger wheel, when going slow its like squeak.......squeak......squeak, any idea's? think it needs another look at in garage or just swap it

The squawk is probably brake pads touching gently the brake discs after a recent use of them. The discs almost always have slight off run so the squawk would happen once every rotation. Again, nothing to worry about.

To ease you mind you can verify this by gently touching the brakes when you next hear the sound. If the noise disappears/changes while you are on the brake you have just verified that it's the brakes. Brakes almost always make little noises like that.

any idea why my 130bhp is getting hot when i do over 80mph
i have already changed the bottom pipe sensor and thermostat. the car is going fine otherwise and the fan is coming on as it should

the engine runs at 90degres any other time

Has the water pump been changed at all? These are prone to failure and could possibly be your problem.
Either way, get it checked asap or it could lead to further damage.
