    Oh Lord.

It's going to be as bad as Sex and the City. Hopefully there wont be tonnes of women dressing up to the nines for this.

This is worse than Sex in the City.

Not only is it gonna have the cinema turned into a location for Hen Nights...it will also have them singing :(

i worked at the musical when it was in dublin, i have seen that show 30+ times and i can still tell you every bit about it so i am steering WELL clear of this movie....and aparantly ms streep can't hold a tune in a giant bucket!

And that includes the Beatles of another era, U2 and anyone else you dream up. ABBA were out on their own, music experts took time to come around to that (including Dave Fanning). Don't comment on Merryl Streep's ability based on what others may be puting out. She's is recognised for her voice (thats why she was chosen). I saw a clip last night where Benny acknowledged the power of her voice in holding the notes in one particular song. Have you ever listened to the song Winner takes it all? The lyrics.....WOW! Now thats real music

she will still be totally unable to hold a candle to sophies mam in the real show! incredible voice!

If thats the girl who appeared in the Point I thought she was excellent. It was a real uplifting show that I went to see twice. But watch 'my' lol Merryl hold that note

Judging by the tone of this thread, this is one to avoid at all costs now and forever (a snob writes!)

Ah come on. I think Mamma Mia is one of those films where all you need to be know is, it's an excuse to have a load of Abba songs in a film. For fans of Abba, that's great (although the trailer does seem to suggest that the film's makers equate "fans of Abba" with "fans of 100% braindead 'hilarious' romantic 'comedies'" which may or may not be fair).

For the rest of us...well, it's not a film aimed at us. I don't think anyone is trying to suggest otherwise. So just do the usual thing and don't go to see it.

I do find it hilarious to see the suggestion that Abba of all people are inherently superior to every other band ever. I'm not saying they're bad, but how about taking the longer perspective and comparing them to classical composers whose work has endured through the centuries rather than other "local phenomena", so to speak? There again, I'm not really expecting anyone to say "well actually, now you mention it, Bach is actually superior to Abba"...

Abba sold more copies than Bach. FACT! :p

Abbas best work is pure pop genius but I never did like Mamma Mia. SOS rocks!

    Mike.

This has just reminded me of Muriels Wedding.

Gonna watch that again before I watch Mamma Mia.

Meryl Streep was just on the Jonathan Woss show, and they showed a clip of her singing Dancing Queen. OK I suppose. They didn't show Pierce Brosnan, but Woss was not complimentary about his voice.

In fairness, nor has Brosnan been. He slates himself for it in every interview I've seen him in lately.

    Saw that too.

    Can't believe she's 59.

    What I'd do..

On topic, also saw the trailer for it on JR and have to say it looks, well, not my type of film, despite my secret obsession with Abba. But still might go anyway. Have a few beers and go in for the craic.

Saw the premiere in the Savoy on Wed - ITS FANTASTIC and I really recommend it! If you're a fan of Mamma Mia already and of course of ABBA then you will love it. Streep steals the show! And even though Brosnan makes you cringe its acually hilarious!

Everyone should go see this as it would be great to see this being the suprise hit this summer!

The guys from ABBA did write some great stuff , the winner takes it all , SOS ,knowing me knowing you ,when i kissed the teacher ,under attack ,head over heels, no doubt about it and their musical arrangments are up there with Briam Wilson and Lennon McCartney .Always being an ABBA fan since i first heard waterloo and Arrival is one of my top fave albums .Mama mia is already a sellout .

Oh god, seems icky. I also can't stand Abba, even if there's the odd tune of theirs that I find quite hummable. They were viewed as naff while they were in the charts and for years after, but then there was that 90s phenomenon of postmodernism and irony and suddenly it was ok to not just like Abba, but to hail them as on a par with The Beatles. Some good pop toons but some horrid, horrid, disposable stuff too.

That said, Muriel's Wedding is fantastic and I think its use of Abba songs works really well.

The post beatles were also considered naff for many years but these things come round in cycles .ABBA are considered the soundtrack to many peoples lives in the 70 and early 80s and beni and a bjorns use of musicians and instruments, such as piano and organs on abba tracks is quite stunning and different to anything else that was going round .If they hadent being from sweden, but say from america or Britain , i think they would have being acceptable by others who dismissed them offhand and their many hits prove they were no 1 hit wonders .

Everybody likes at least one ABBA song.Even as a massive metal fan I do. I love some Abba specially when pissed. I saw Mamma Mia in the west end, brought
my ma in law for her 50th bday. It was great, all the auld ones were dancing in their seats and the Prince of Wales theatre is not that big.

Cant really see it on the big screen. Then again I dont like Meryl Streep.

Muriel is gold. I Do I Do I Do up the aisle is just comical.

Meryl Streep is sure bet for an Oscar nomination and Golden Globe win for Best Actress Musical Comedy. She is brillant singing, dancing and acting from her all top class.

    I really enjoyed this movie

Pierce Brosnan singing wasnt great but he and Streep had great chemistry

I singing ABBA songs now constantly

DVD sales of 'Mamma Mia! The Movie' are set to copy its box-office success, as a retailer predicted today that the film could become its biggest-selling ever.

The 'Mamma Mia!' DVD, due out on November 24, is set to topple Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV – VI) as the-best selling DVD before release, according to Amazon.co.uk.

The Abba-inspired film starring Meryl Streep has been top of the retailer’s DVD charts for the past two months.

Amazon said the film has already sold more copies before release than any of the Harry Potter movies.

It is currently the retailer’s third biggest-selling pre-order ever, just behind 'The Bourne Ultimatum', the biggest-selling DVD of 2007.

Sarah Hughes, DVD Manager at Amazon.co.uk, said: “We could well be looking at 'Mamma Mia!' not only being our biggest selling pre-order of all time but our biggest selling DVD full stop.”

The movie has already become Universal’s biggest UK film of all time. It has generated more than £57m (€73.77m) at the UK box office.

Well i for one will be getting the DVD
