Looking for Jobs, on job seekers allowance, then offered scholarship , what to do?

    Basically I emailed a lecturer in college saying I was interested in
    doing a Masters but never thought much more about it.

    Finished 4th year as usual and went looking for jobs and applied
    for job seekers allowance to keep me going while I was looking for
    jobs.

    The other day I got an email saying I qualified for a scholarship to do
    a Masters (Taught) and I don't know what to do.

    Will I get in trouble with the welfare office if I accept the Masters?
    At the time of application they ask you if you have any intention of
    further education and I said no as I had no intention of doing a masters
    at that time and had no idea that I would get offered a scholarship....

    I have also heard that a taught masters isn't really worth the paper its
    written on so that confuses the situation even more....

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Desperate here! :(

    Go do your Masters, you heard WRONG!
    Don't worry about whats happened, these people are not unreasonable. Always be honest to yourself and others
    Do you really believe this is the first time this has happened to somebody?
    Forget it, go meet them, tell them whats happened (and be excited and delighted you got it!)

    a taught masters is every bit as good as a one done by research imo
    as a holder of one im definately delighted to have gotten it, it entitles me to an increased salary

    dont let the begrudgers get you down, take the course and be delighted

    the other thing will sort itself out!

    Just to add to the voice of reason about the Masters - I too have a taught masters and it is held in as high regard as a research masters.

    In fact, employers have never asked me what type of masters it is.

    In this day and age, do the masters.

    All masters programmes should be accredited, so you've nothing to worry about. If the course seems interesting to you then go for it :)

    I had similar worries about a taught MA but my lecturer assured me it was a good way into a phd.I think its more important that you are really interested in the topics being covered than whether its taught or research.Congrats on being accepted.

    Yeah I am definitely interested in it for sure.

    Its a masters in Electronic Systems.

    Thats great to hear all the positive things about the Masters
    as no one really ever tells you anything about it.(Until now:))

    On the same topic can anyone tell me what happens when you find out you are going back to uni,do they take you off the dole?

    Hey Brian,

    I don't know what they are going to do about the dole but it doesn't matter
    as I really need money and I'm going to start temping if I have to.

    The job seekers allowance is around 200 euro but if you are renting and
    fending for yourself in Dublin, it disappears very quickly.

    I tried to get the grant this year as a mature student and they will not
    give it to me as I haven't had a "break in study".

    Am furious to be honest as now I will end up owing 6 or 7 grand at the
    end of this masters. :(
