ipod video conversion

I've had an ipod video for a long time i've never really gotten around to trying to watch a movie on it can anyone recoomend a decent free avi > mp4 converter? I downloaded a film in .mp4 and it wont seem to play, so in itunes i chose the convert to ipod/iphone and same issue screen is just blank and then it goes back to…
