Instruments you hate

Just listening to the end of the new We are Scientists album, and it has reminded me of my distinct dislike of the saxophone. I don't mind it so much in jazz music, but used in a cheesy awful way in rock/pop... I really just want to vomite when I hear it.

The oboe also sucks, but when are you ever really going to hear one of them?

Violins played on their own. 20 of them together in an orchestra sound great, heard on it's own I want to smash the thing to bits.

Anybody else got anything to add?

You sir have issues. There is no instrument I hate. They can all be beautiful.

I don't think I hate any instruments tbh.

Hate is bit of a strong word for it, but I am not fond of badly made instruments in general, especially at the extreme registers. I always try not to judge a type of instrument on a bad example of it, or a bad use of it. But generally, I have lukewarm feelings towards banjos, and I have yet to hear a recorder that didn't make me wince just a little. But it's all about the context really. A lot of ensemble instruments don't sound as well out of ensemble etc.

    A. What kind of drugs are you taking?
    B. Can you get me some?

:p Seriously though, if we want to talk semantic philosophy, they can all be ugly as well. I'm down with the whole non-hating "zen" thing, but not to the extent that I think we should make linguistic communication ineffective by trying to apply objective redefinitions to subjective words.

It's okay to not like things, it doesn't make you a capitalist. ;)

Do recorders really count as an instrument? I thought they were just something easy for children to learn so that they can move on to something decent if they've any musical ability.

I vaguely remember recorder lessons 15 years ago.

And yeah I'm not down with the zen non-hating thing. Ok maybe hate is a strong word, but I find it hard to believe you can like the sound of every single instrument out there. It's a bit like saying you like every single style of music out there, I wouldn't really take anybody who says that seriously.

Have you heard one that's not plastic (i.e. wooden), or are you aware that there are many different types/sizes of recorders?

The recorder is a whole subcategory of woodwind instruments, tainted by mass produced plastic pieces of shít.

    Bagpipes. And Uileann pipes.

I think I'm pretty much cool with everything else. ;)

I'm an advanced recorder player myself. Sorta saddening the way it's perceived by most as a "kid's instrument" or a toy, when it actually dates back so far and is most definitely a valid instrument.

    Thanks JC, good post.

Can I add recorder to my list? :p

    Just joking. :D

Plastic recorders are horrible, but wooden ones are fine.

Two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls

    No, they're prescription. :pac:

Yeah you're certainly right, any instrument has to potential to be beautiful or ugly as sin, depends on the context, but I'm fairly certain there's no instrument I hate.

A man after my own heart.. I cannot stand the Sax.
Downmarket by The Blades is one of my alltime favourite tunes is almost ruined by a sax solo in the middle :(

I kind of disliked that period in the late 80s early 90s were Irish and Scottish "Celtic rock bands" had to have a fiddle player for extra diddley-eidleness, waterboys etc. I don't mind the fiddle at all but it was really cliched for a while.

I don't mind the bagpipes but I always disliked that bagpipe guitar sound of Big Country

Fair enough, I've never heard actual musicians play proper recorders. Just kids with the plastic ones.

My last memory of hearing a recorder was some recital my sister's school had when she was in 1st year. Basically the whole year (100 or so) of 12 year olds playing the one tune on recorders. It still gives me nightmares.

Brass instruments can sound awful if not recorded properly, could be why you don't like the sound on the "We Are Scientists" album. Can't say I've heard their music though.

    Currently reading Fear and Loathing....odd.

+1 for bagpipes. Actually all instruments in Trad Irish Music. It sounds like the noise I make when I catch a curly in my meat helmet by mistake......

No it's really just the saxophone itself. I find it's inclusion on any rock/pop a complete cheese fest, and I really hate cheese. The Zutons, I'm looking at you. But the sax player is hot so I'll let it slide.

I don't hate it by itself, but I wouldn't be all that fond of it either.

Under the circumstances, I should hope not! :pac:

I have and I am. Though haven't heard them often, and admittedly I was thinking more of the higher register ones. And being fair, I don't think I'd really notice any of them in ensemble! ;)

I like jazzy sax, also it sounds great on Floyd's DSotM and some Springsteen/E-Street Band stuff. Also I like some old Madness stuff, and that has a whole lot of sax.

The only instrument I can honestly say I don't like is Lars Ulrich's snare from St. Anger, fecking goes through my head, I can see what he was trying to do but I just don't get it...

I hate all electric drums. They offend me!

To this day I still can't figure out what he was attempting with that sound.
The earlier albums seemed to work because they were tight a hell. The sound on Anger seems like the snare is disengaged and there's reverb  on it?!?
Makes it sound loose, flabby and the guitar riffing is barely audible, though as it turns out that's probably not a bad thing.:D

Have accordians and steel guitars been covered yet?

Not a big fan of the accordian. My Dad has a few and plays 'em all the time. I was made learn it when I was a wee lad, there was an accordian marching band and my Dad and Uncle were involved. Was going great till they wanted me to learn marching routines and stuff.
On a plus note he bought me my first guitar for cutting my longish hair when I was fourteen, sold one of his favourite accordians to finance my guitar and amp. So, accordians are good for something!!
