Join the dole queue you'll find plenty of heavy machinery operators there who can advice you.

To be honest, you couldn't have come at a worse time. The construction industry seems to be dying in this country.
I think you do need a special licence for operating heavy machinery. I think there's even a separate theory test for such a licence.
Are you here on a visa or do you have Eu/Irish citizenship?

    that was a sarcastic answer.
    Dole is social welfare.
Ireland is experiencing the beginnings of a recession, with construction workers starting to be hit the worst. Finding a job as a heavy plant operator while not impossible, will be very difficult with out a safe pass, experience, perhaps even qualification/license.

Sorry Diesel-D that was some twisted humour on my part. The dole is what we call our unemployment benefit, times are tough particularly in construction.

Here's a link to info on the Irish drivers licence. It seem you will need a category W licence. That sites useful for all sorts of info.

    All the best with it!

neither, my mum and her partner have been living here for 5 yrs. now he(partner) is dual citizen and i'm currently staying with them. trying to make a new chapter in my life..i have the option go elsewhere if need be.

unemployment benefits are not an option.. i didn't move here to be the typical american and suck off your country. i want to what it takes to pay my own way the best i can.. if i knew ahead of time what the dole was then i would've appreciated the humor.. thanks for the link. it seems that i have a lot of work to do

London may be a more viable option in the meantime. The construction industry here will to have to undergo some serious changes in the coming years/months.

We're just coming off the high water mark for construction in this country and the tide is going out fast. There exists a hell of a lot of surplus in the sector in labour, which cannot continue.

Although I'm not an expert on the situation, I hear London is more favourable to people looking to enter the construction industry at the moment. A lot of public projects with the Olympics, etc.

Anyways, the best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

i also heard that about the olympics. construction is just one option i was looking into.. don't have to stick to that but it was just the last thing i was doing in the states. " i'm a jack of all trades and a master of none". can't be picky at this moment in time. basically just checking my options. i don't want to be looked at as a typical american. just trying to make a new life for myself at the age of 31 in a new country/countries but thanks for the info
