Maybe I was just unlucky but I had nothing but trouble with a refurbished Thinkpad I got through Back From the Future a good while back.

    It is what it's.

Its a decent enough spec for surfing the web, Microsoft Office documents, watching dvd's and music. Dont expect to be doing hi-def video editing or playing recent games on this machine. There are no Windows XP disc's included so if the drive crashes, you'll loose the OS. Use Norton Ghost to mirror the drive to an external drive. Or just ditch XP and install Ubuntu :-)

Yep same here and it was a Thinkpad as well.

Specs dont read that bad for a basic all rounder.

I had one with work. Treated it like most people treat a work laptop ie, crap.

    Never missed a beat.

the hard drive is tiny so dont plan on storing too much on it, it could do with another 512mb of memory,
for basic use you will get away with the 512mb, you will also need to have a copy of xp pro as it is not supplied with the machine so if anything goes wrong with your operating system you have nothing to reload from unless there is a backup partition on the hard drive , which will make your available 30gb even smaller,

so in a few words, ok for basic use, i.e internet, listening to music, that kinda stuff

just copped, no cd/dvd burner either, it will play em but not burn em.

Is there delivery on top of that?

Still, amazing bargain for a laptop.

I remember my father paying 2grand Irish for a laptop in 2001. Pentium 3 processor, 128MB RAM.

I have a couple of T31's lying around with similar specs (although I think mine have CD Burners and 15" screens, maybe). I didn't think they were worth anything, hmmm, maybe its to the for sale forum with my ones !

t30's are about 4 years old, good machines but probably a bit old
the t40 was a good bit better and might still be worth looking at

    price isn't too bad though

Wouldn't really call that a bargain to be honest at all. It's a really old laptop, ancient, hot running P4, with a 30 day warranty - you'd get it for that price off adverts or similar easily and a basic 350 euro laptop would destroy it performance wise.

For example: Toshiba Satelitte Pro 370 euro

For twice the price, you're getting:
    • An actual proper warranty
    • A video card that's literally 10x faster
    • A CPU that's 2-3x faster and about 4-5x in multi-thread apps
    • A HD that's 4x larger
    • Twice the memory, and faster
    • dvd-rw, more usb, etc

Fair enough Thinkpads are fairly robust but 200 euro for a laptop that's about 6 years old, ancient hardware, with no proper warranty is not exactly what I would consider a bargain by any stretch....

A downside to these laptops and the reason my 2 are now gathering dust is a lack of WiFi, plus they have USB 1.1 ports. Thats right no USB2.0 so it takes a very long time to copy stuff to memory keys etc...

Although that being said, I did stick in a wireless PCMIA card and a USB2 card into one of them and it was perfect after that. Apart from that they are very reliable. I used them for work, but the battery life was always awful right from brand new.

The model that was for sale had builtin wifi. They have sold out btw.

1 gig on vista is not enough though!

An extra 1gb of ram costs about 20 euro....I think you get the point I was making! Out-of-warranty, 6 year old, slow hardware is not really worthy of being touted as a fantastic bargain at 50% the cost of a machine 400% faster. ...

Fair enough some people might choose to spend 150-200 on a second hand laptop if they can't/don't want to spend more, and Thinkpads are solid machines, but that doesn't mean it's a 'bargain'....

Wouldn't be the best with the ol' spec analysis...

Frankly, useless. Web and email fine, anything else pretty much at all, is a nono.

    You're exaggerating.

There are a disproportionate number of powerusers on boards. This laptops specs will suffice for most average users everyday needs.

My only worry is the machine shítting itself anytime soon.

I'm really not. I have a laptop with a 1.6 centrino, 120GB HDD, 128MB graphics that's two years old and all it will do is web, email and voice clients. It will play music as well obviously, but I've a suspicion that the other lappy would struggle to multitask.

Asking it even to do Google Earth is tiresome.

OP, if you plan to buy that laptop and also plan to do anything other than web/email and or music, prepare to be very dissatisfied.
