    nikon capture

    photoshop has a plugin

    em dunno what else

most raw viewers i assume would cover it since its nikons 'raw' format(i quote cos its not actual raw but close enough to save agruement)

NEF files are Nikon's RAW files. You'll ideally need a RAW file editor to view/edit these properly. It should have come with the camera?

If not you can download Nikon's View NX for free. While this is only a viewer for RAW file and not a RAW file editor, it DOES allow you to convert the RAW files to .tif or .jpg so you can edit them then.

    Hope this helps.

Assuming you're running a Windows PC, Picasa will also you to view your NEF files (and most other RAW camera formats), although possibly not if it's one of the newer models.

Again, if you're on a Windows based system, Microsoft has Windows Live Photo Gallery (can also be used for other RAW formats), which when combined with Nikon's NEF Codec will allow you to view NEF files in Windows Explorer, just like JPGs.

View NX will do it as already pointed out, I am not too fond of this and found the older one, nikon viewer to be better, but this will not work on newer NEF files, like those produced by the D300. Paint Shop pro and Photoshop will also work, but you might need the pluggin.

Many of the free/low cost RAW converters use DCRAW as their processing engine with a graphical UI on top, its webpage has a list.

Other than those you are looking at paid for software from all the usual suspects named above.

I just had the same problem yesterday :)

UFraw (a plugin for Gimp) worked for me. I downloaded the NEFcodec mentioned by leohoju as well.

You can also use Adobe Camera Raw as a Photoshop plugin, works a treat.

If you are running windows, you can download the Microsoft plugin to view RAW files which also allows to see NEF files too - very handy!! Just like clicking on a JPG and seeing the image - perfect!!
