A runner friend of mine over from States has pointed me in the direction of this: http://www.halhigdon.com/5K%20Training/5-Kinter.htm

I had pointed out to him that I had hit a road-block on my 5k time (my fav) and that I wanted to run faster. Any thoughts? Looks like the norm you see about. At the very least I'm hoping to up my mileage - which at the moment is very poor.

Also, I do a lot of gym work - a bad habit from rugby days but I think I've finally embraced the low-weight, high-reps idea. Indeed I'm about 1 to 2 stone lighter than I once was but I hope to improve on what I do there further. Any suggestions on the gym stuff?

Finally, I have decided to bite the bullet and I *eventually* will prob join a club. Booo...!

    Hi Geoff,
Higdon is very popular in the States and puts together some do-able programs. His marathon schedules in particular have big followings I believe.

I haven't looked at the 5k schedules though.

Sounds to me as if you are doing all the right things but just need to get a little faster leg turnover. Do you do speed sessions along with pounding the miles?

From what i can see from that plan it looks decient. Seems to have all the elements that you need. I think the idea of the tempo run is to increase the leg turnover so you should keep.

This is an area I'm working on at the moment. There are some good books out there too on training, i'm reading Running Strong at the moment .

    cheers guys,

Roy - yeh I often go to track to do some faster stuff, but I need to step this up. Work has been crazy recently but at last has started to subside so I look forward to getting into some proper routines here..! Also the tempo side

Shels - exactly what I was thinking was the tempo stuff which I don't do/haven't done before... Looks interesting! I've found a new running route near me which has quite a few hills etc so I'm looking forward to that too..!

Anyway - I suppose I'll just get out and do it!! Any thoughts on the gym stuff btw?

Well a gym program is a must too, i'd say you seem to be on the right track with more reps on lower weight, improve power rather then bulk, As you want to improve speed and get your mile 5 k time down, some work on the core would also be of benifit,

i'm doing 2 session a week now , one in the gym and one circut training session, mostly squats and some free weights . But looking into a better program now.

yep I go to the gym prob 3 times a week - less than I used to - but now more efficiently and starting to get a hang of what's useful and what's not. Anyway, will see how it all goes. I think for me prob the main thing is to get some proper mileage. I mean I was doing f***-all in that area!! :)
