A mate of mine is hoping to design his back garden in different size slabs like 600x600, 600x450, 600x300 in a 22ft x 21ft back garden...He wants to do a design that is not uniform or something like that...He was hoping to punch in those measurements and hit the return button to give him a layout of slabs..

    Anyone any ideas..

    Thanks

Limiting the layout pattern to the size of the slab in what is relatively a compact area is not a good way to go. Using a complex pattern layout in a compact area will also define the actual area size and probably make it appear smaller than it actually is. To create space use a more open seamless pattern and leave the non-conforming qualities to other aspects of the garden.

Google Sketchup (which is free) will let you do a lot of to-scale space mapping, but you have to use your brain a bit and learn how to use the package. I've used it to throw around some garden layout ideas - it's been very useful to show me just how much space in my garden vegetable beds of the size I was planning are going to eat up, and so on.

http://www.pavingexpert.com/random01.htm#calcs is a good site with a lot of info and there's a few calculators to choose from.
