Boosting signal for O2 Huawei E270 HSPA modem. Any experience?

A colleague's home is close to an O2 mast and purchased a USB Huawei E270 broadband HSPA wireless broadband modem.

But the signal is still weak. So I noticed a possible booster solution from
    http://www.mobdev.co.uk/acatalog/ANTENNAS__AERIALS_.html

consisting of an antenna and a coupling plate which would sit on the modem (which will drop the signal by 4 db or so, so antenna must compensate).

Alternatively, it's meant to be possible to open up the modem and fit an adapter

to allow a direct connection to the antenna (after opening and drilling the case).

Has anyone any experience or recommendations with similar products, so I'm not suggesting snake oil to him?

    Thanks

It's his only method of getting some sort of decent internet connection, so he is not going to return it.
    Even ISDN failed.

With the O2 device, he can get internet most of the time, but not reliably in the office at the back of the house. If anything he appears to be too close to the mast.
Because of that I don't know how O2 could help.

Vodafone in the UK have a E272 with a built-in antenna connector, but this does not appear to be available on the market in unlocked form.
