In my opinion, you shouldn't bother with a bartending course. You'll get a lot more out of hands-on experience in a bar. You might have to start as floorstaff but all the best barstaff I know started this way, including myself. You might get lucky and get hired as a trainee barperson either. You should go to the kind of bar you'd like to work in and see if they have any work going. Get your foot in the door and be enthusiastic about it. You can always go on courses later such as customer service, cocktails etc*

*These courses are usually nothing more than an excuse for a piss up. ;)

I worked as a bar man for a while. I had never worked in a bar before.

It took me about 5 minutes to get the hang of pouring pints.

It's an easy job. You don't need to do a course.

As Adyx says, start as lounge staff to get your foot in the door.

    Age?
    Experience?
All the bartenders I know started working in slow bars and gained experience that way.

Best experience is on the job, that's how I and many others like me learned the tricks of the trade. When I worked abroad I found another job working in a bar in Malta. I picked up the lessons working in Lowe's Bar, Rialto. Life changing experiences believe you me!!!

Best thing to do would be to ring Failte Ireland as they provide courses such as these and they will let you know where they are on. They are normally run though the ITs, so I guess GMIT would be another place to ask. You can do day release, which would be one day a week and work the rest.
