Lenght of hrs between training?

    Hi All,

    Just wondering what people's opinion is on this. I go Jogging/ruuning in the morning at about 6.30am and then agin in the evening at bout 7ish. each time between 4 to 6 miles. This would only happen from monday 2 friday. Is this alright or is it too much?? I am leaving about 12 hrs between runs. I think this would be the similar to running on a Monday in the evening and agin on the Tuesday morning only.. Am i right ??

    So, are you saying you do 10 sessions in 5 days?
    Whether it's too much or not, depends on what you are hoping to achieve. If you want to get faster, regardless of the distance, you would probably be as well to do a few faster sessions, rather than just doing 10 easy runs. If you are just doing 10 easy sessions or 40-60miles of easy running a week you are probably doing a lot of 'junk' miles (ie you would probably improve more in terms of race times by doing 20-30miles a week with some speedwork than doing 40-60miles a week of easy running). But if you are just hoping to get fit and you're not worried about speed it might be okay, or if it is your means of transportation it's okay, as long as your body is okay, you're not getting injured regularly or overly fatigued, then it's fine. You must be quite fit.

    Hi Flat,

    No i don't do Ten runs but I have often done the morning evening thing 2 or 3 times a week. I don't be breaking any records, I suppose I'd be doing a steady pace maybe 8 min/mile most of the time with the odd fatlark thrown in which I find doesn't imporve by time by much.. maybe a 2-3 min over 4 mile..
    I have done 2 marathons, Last October in Dublin and Connemarathon in April. I was in a bad way after the Connemarathon this was put down to ITband and not enough millage on the clock durring training. I was running evryday but hadn't done more than 7.5 mile run.. Same traingin method for the Dublin marathon but not the same injuries. So the plan this time for Dublin is to have a plan.. which I do.. But I was just wondering if I was gaining anything from doing a morning /evening thingy.

    Oh as for been fit.. lol.. I feel the same when I run 3 miles, 12 miles or a marathon.. knackered with big red face to go with it.. :) maybe something to do with going same pace all the time ... not sure...

    If that's the case you need to get some speed work going. As Seb Coe said, 'Long slow running, makes a slow, long runner'. Once you get over about 60miles a week, 2 a day runs probabloy are a safer way to go about things. Up to that point though 1 a day should be enough. If only running once a day, you might have more energy for these speed session. And once you get into these and start improving, maybe you could then up the quantity with 2 a days if necessary?

    hi flat,
    I'm back. How about if I run 6am on a monday and then don't run again till 7 pm on Tuesday for example is that too much time between runs??? I done this a few times too.:confused:

    As for speed work are you talking about fartlak? Where I live is all country roads nothing but long steep hills. this means when doing fartlak running up hills is tough.

    Fartlek, yes, but also interval sessions and tempo runs. To get info on these look up www.runningforfitness.org (I think it's in the pace calculator bit, gives 15 different types of speed session, very detailed with specific running and rest times (based on a recent race time) and www.mcmillanrunning.com

    It's difficult if you live on bad roads, is there a local GAA club, where you could just go around the field? Or join an athletics club where they may have facilities for speedwork.

    I don't think there's a right or wrong in terms of times bewteen your runs, as long as you can cope and are not getting injured or run down.
