Heating water?

Need a bit of help here.
Moved in to our house at the weekend from an apartment.

The house is approx 8-9years old, has central heating.
Problem is I can't find out how to switch on the water heater.
There is an immersion but I'd rather use the CH to heat the water.

The CH unit has a timer on it (circular with pins for each 15mins). I have the time set for when I want the heating to come on, but I don't want the radiators on so I have the thermostat turned down in the hall.

When I got up this morning, there was no hot water (cold shower :( ).
I can't find a switch for switching from water to rads (like the system in my parents house has). Would it be possible that the only way to heat the water was via the immersion? Or is there something I'm doing wrong.

What you need to do is turn OFF your rads. Then turn your thermostat UP Set your CH to come on for ten minutes (or whatever the nearest time is on your timer) This will heat the water in the tank. Just remember to turn off the rads. If you set the thermostat to the max it will heat your tank in about ten minutes.

I would have thought it would have been more efficient (cheaper, notwithstanding the price of electricity) to heat DHW using the immersion rather than the CH, given that your heating a significant volume of water before you get any heat to your cylinder at all with the Central Heating.

    I may be wrong.
